Doc. Taggart and Doc. Gorman speak to Democratic Presidential candidate Alton Parker about the sick Democratic donkey, who is hanging in a sling.

The caption reads 'He Has Eaten Up His Free Silver and Free Trade Bedding and Is a Mighty Sick Animal'

Taggart and Gorman were two of the top Democrats in the country. The Democratic Party had abandoned some of its principle platform from previous years, and had suffered a loss of support. Dan Patch was a famous racehorse of the time.

Happy Hooligan Hearst

April 9, 1904

Thomas Taggart beats William Hearst up for trying to get cozy with Aunty Democracy, while Brother Gus Parker propositions Aunty in the corner. Brother Montmorency Bryan chastises Hearst as well.

The caption reads "Brother Montmorency Bryan was just introducing him to Aunty Democracy when the policeman butted in." The signature in the corner reads “ Apologies to F. Opper”

The cartoon is a reference to the Democratic party at the time, Hearst had just failed to capture any delegates in the Democratic primary in Indiana, where Taggart was political boss. Alton B. Parker instead took the delegates. The cartoon is in the style of the comic strip Happy Hooligan, by Frederick Opper.

“Foxy Grandpa”

September 6, 1904

Vice Presidential candidate Henry G. Davis, behind a wall, runs a contraption that raises his money just out of reach as Thomas Taggart and August Belmont climb a ladder to get to it. A sign on the wall reads "Democratic Campaign Managers."

Taggart and Belmont were the two chief strategists of the Democratic campaign, and they wanted Davis, a millionaire and the Vice Presidential candidate, to contribute his own money to the race.

Dare he Uncork the Genie?

September 1, 1904

Thomas Taggart, standing atop the Democratic donkey, proposes to uncork the bottle of genie William Jennings Bryan, who holds a horn of Bryan Oratory.

Taggart was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Bryan held sway over a large portion of the Democratic voters, but was also a very controversial figure who clashed with the party leadership.

Tom Taggart, who 'helped defeat Hearst from buying the nomination', looks on as Henry Davis writes a check to the Democratic committee for a million dollars. The check reads “Pay to Dem Campaign Committee for Vice Presidential Nomination”

Davis was the vice presidential candidate for the Democrats, and a millionaire. Taggart had pushed for his nomination

Patching Up a Platform

August 1, 1904

Alton Parker uses his letter of acceptance to plaster over the hole in the Democratic platform, as Tom Taggart looks on. A sign reads “Beware the gap the money plank was omitted. Money questions not an issue Democratic Convention”

The caption reads 'Judge Parker will use his letter of acceptance to reinforce the famous Sheehan telegram over the hole in the democratic platform - Where the money plank is missing'.

The money issue, the issue of a gold standard vs. a silver standard, was a major issue dividing the Democratic party, and Parker was working to resolve it, as it had not been included in the official platform. Taggart was also trying to resolve it as campaign manager.

The Democratic Sandwich Man

July 27, 1904

Tom Taggart makes the Democratic donkey a sandwich of Practical Politics between slices of Issues; behind the counter, he also has Wall St. Pork and Beans, Aunty Democracy's Famous Hard Times Cakes, John Lind's Anti-Trust Wind-Pudding, etc.

The caption reads "The issue slices may be pretty thin but Tom will put plenty of practical politics between."

Taggart was selected as the Democratic National Chairman, and would run the Campaign for president.

Dr. Taggart and the Democratic Epizootic

July 5th, 1901

Doctor Thomas Taggart pours Ginger down the throat of the Democratic donkey, to make it feistier.

Taggart was the Mayor of Indianapolis, and a prominent Democrat Party Boss. He had also recently joined the Democratic National Committee, where he would have a hand in selecting every Democratic presidential candidate for the next 20 years.
