I realized I forgot to post this here the other day
griefer legends: fredi
i have held off on this for a long time because "ooo minecraft animation cringe" but then i realized that it literally does not matter, so here we are
i have a lot to say about griefer legends, and the line between things i think could be inferred from the original series and things i made up for an au is kind of thin in certain places, so why not talk about the character that exemplifies this hazy divide the best, fredi?
let us begin with some context.
griefer legends is a minecraft animated series created by fredisaalanimations. it's about a group of friends, fredi, herobrine, and joe, and their journey to uncover the secrets that fredi's late best friend, einshine, left behind in his death. it's enjoyable and has some interesting mysteries, although i doubt that the ones i find interesting are supposed to capture my attention so much. i do have a couple general grievances with it, but that's for another post
i would absolutely recommend it. please watch it. i want to see fredisaalanimation's dreams come true
now we talk about the man himself: FREDI!!!!
not to be confused with fredisaalanimations, who i will be referring to using his full youtube channel name, fredi is a former griefer and former best friend of einshine, one of the last remaining legendary griefers(until he died). i inferred the following from the series. maybe there are other interpretations of him
at first, i thought he was rather bland. but, there is more to him than meets the eye! fredi seems to deeply regret his past griefing and hesitates to fight others. he says himself that he was really uncomfortable while doing it, which says not only a lot about fredi but also about einshine, fredi's supposedly great best friend. he actively tries to be a better person, to save lives rather than ruin them unless the latter is absolutely necessary, as seen when he saves the little kid on the road but does steal a friend's boat. as even more support, even when it becomes clear that the patrons(or patreons... i don't know. the captions say one thing while the characters say another) are a threat to the mc gang's lives, he doesn't allow herobrine to hurt them, nor does he try to hurt them himself. even when he finally asks herobrine to slow them down, it's just to block their path, not to injure them
fredi also values his friends a lot, so much so that he even allows herobrine to blame him and beat him up for something that wasn't his fault. and when joe gives him what is, like, half shit and half good advice, fredi thanks him
part of this, however, could also be a truckload of self doubt. the patrons accuse him of griefing them, and while he was an accomplice, that's not the same as being the actual person who stole their stuff. he was an accomplice who didn't do anything but hold the stuff that was being stolen and stand there, mind you. the actual griefer, jinx(yes. jinx. from arcane), could have stolen them back if he put them down anyway. yet, he doesn't stand up for himself
he didn't immediately catch my interest like herobrine and legion did, but it seems like that's a part of his character. dull on the surface, like he's trying to make himself smaller, allowing others to shine. maybe it's passivity. maybe it's low self esteem. maybe both.
headcanons
his full name is fredi saal
he and einshine were pretty great friends, but he never felt completely like einshine valued his wants and perspectives. if he felt uncomfortable griefing, then why would he continue doing it? it's not like he was a passive bystander. he was actively participating in the griefing: causing death, property damage, and general mayhem. that requires intent, a focused head in the game, and that kind of intention needed to be honed because he was shown in the "legendary griefer" mv to not only be doing the griefing, but also fucking enjoying it. and if he's faking his enjoyment, how far is he willing to take that? at this point, does it even matter whether or not he genuinely liked it? all this to say that fredi was pressured by einshine to participate in the griefing activities, starting off small but eventually getting to city level shit to the point where he did actually begin to enjoy it, and him saying that he was always uncomfortable is both a half truth and an appeal to his guilty conscience
it also seems like he harbors anger or resentment inside, possibly due to self hatred, grief, or both, because he accused laura of trying to put einshine's mask on even though he let her hold and inspect it, so she could easily just be trying to get a closer look. to this day i still don’t know what she was trying to do because of the limitations of minecraft animation. was she actually trying to put it on or did fredi overreact? anyway i think i would still have this headcanon even if that scene was more clear
with the life threatening activities he and his friends get up to, i feel like fredi would struggle with abandonment issues after einshine died. what would he do if another one of his best friends died?
also, as of ep 5, all of fredi's close friends(who are still alive) have left him, may never return, and he is stuck on an island in the middle of the ocean with two strangers. even if einshine wasn't killed right in front of him, there is absolutely no way he is completely fine with this, which is why i headcanon that his fear of abandonment and self esteem issues get worse. logically, he knows that joe likely left out of necessity and herobrine was deceived, but logic isn't going to stop his brain, full of doubt, from conjuring up horrible what-ifs. what if joe wanted to leave for a long time and finally had the perfect excuse? what if herobrine never trusted him in the first place? what if they were better off without him?
role in the au
i’m not going to go into too much detail because i’m debating whether i should show or tell his character arc, but basically he goes down a path of self destruction and loses himself, sort of the opposite of au!herobrine’s development. there are two endings: one where au!fredi doesn’t accept his friends’ help and completely loses his identity, and one where he does and begins to work on himself. i wouldn’t call either of them good or bad endings because each have good and bad aspects that the other doesn’t
what could come/role in the original
as of the time i'm writing this, griefer legends ep 5 has released and ep 6 is almost complete. from fredisaalanimations's livestreams, it looks like we'll see more of fredi, laura, and finn. which means we get to see where fredi's character is going, because frankly he doesn't seemed to have changed all that much since ep 1(please correct me if i am wrong). maybe he will begin confronting his insecurities, maybe we'll get his reaction to MORE LORE PLEASE MORE LORE PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU-
anyways, that was my ramble about the personality of fredi from the og griefer legends and my au. i will do relationships in another post. thank you for coming and have a great day
The them
OH MY GOD????
I've been meaning to make these two's designs. Einshine and Freddi. There's a backstory for em but I ain't gonna tell ya about it :)
Might end up making a small comic story about these two or just a wattpad story
Not to be griefer legends on main, but im gonna be griefer legends on main
You can blame that one 3 second clip in fight with me for this
the hero
this would happen during the stage of their relationship where legion is starting to see herobrine as an actual friend instead of a tool. and that horrifies him
