She began her career as a dancer at the Cotton club in Harlem. She's most famous for her role as Peola in the Imitation of Life. What her character did was something she never desired to do, pass for white. She didn't believe in the concept of white supremacy. She was proud to be black. She and her sister Isabel are in the 4th pic, who went on to marry Adam Clayton Powell. She served as entertainment editor of the People’s Voice, which Powell established in 1942. She helped found the Negro Actors Guild of America in 1937. She was married twice first to Lawrence Brown a trombonist in Duke Ellington's orchestra, then to Dr. Hugh Anthony Bell, who she's in the last picture with. Fredi Washington, a Georgia native who moved to Connecticut, was a force to be reckoned with. She broke through racial limitations to help establish and grow organizations like the Negro Actors Guild and the NAACP. She was also an entertainment editor of the People’s Voice, and acted in movies and plays. In 1975 Fredi was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, in 1979 she received a CIRCA Award for a lifetime achievement in the preforming arts. She died in 1994 in Stamford, Connecticut. In real life Fredi refused to do so and fought against racism in Hollywood. People advised her to pass as white so she could further her career, as a result of her refusal she only had 10 movie credits to her name most were minor roles or unaccredited "Imitation" was her biggest role.
