I hope my post earlier piqued your interest - I have answers, or well, some! I want to go more in depth with some, so will return to this subject in a week. As for my previous post and question - NONE of those hamsters are white bellied! They are all SBH hamsters - #Diaval, #Tick (Now Pascal), #Toby, #Dove, #FredThomas and #Cordelia! Toby is banded, but the rest of those hamsters are recessive dappled carriers. Just because a hamster has a white belly doesn't mean that ARE white bellied - patterns like dominant spot, recessive dappled and banded create both a white stomach and a white pattern on the back. However, many other genes also cause white on the stomach, including polywhite, and heterozygous recessive dappled. This is why breeders often caution against breeding pattern to pattern, since they could be hiding white belly. White belly, when homozygous (two copies), creates a hamster who is eyeless, fully white, and may have other complications. This is why pedigrees are so important. I know that I can safely breed, say, Dove to Diaval, and not get eyeless pups. This is because I know based on their pedigrees that they are both recessive dappled carriers. BUT - a pedigree is ONLY as good as its breeder. Anyone can create a pedigree with their hamster, or breed one generation and produce a lineage paper. It takes hard work, genetics knowledge, and a lot of dedication to have well bred, pedigreed hamsters. Genetics are cool! If anything is unclear or confusing please ask questions.
