Weekend mood: free-flowing
Mapping millions of kilometers of waterways shows that just 37 percent of rivers longer than 1,000 kilometers remain unchained by human activities.
Free-flowing rivers are an endangered species on Earth. Only about a third of the world’s longest rivers still flow freely along their entire lengths, unchained by dams or reservoirs, scientists report in the May 9 Nature.
The study is the first global map of river “connectivity,” the ability of river water to move freely downstream, across floodplains and into and out of aquifers throughout the year. Connectivity signals river health, and is vital to protect freshwater biodiversity, support fish stocks and deliver sediment to coastal regions threatened by rising seas.
The team, led by geographer Günther Grill of McGill University in Montreal, used satellite data to map 12 million kilometers of rivers around the globe. Of the planet’s 246 rivers that are longer than 1,000 kilometers, only 37 percent still run free, the team found.
Most of the remaining free-flowing rivers are in more remote parts of the world, such as Canada’s Liard River in the Arctic and Zambia’s Luangwa in the Congo Basin.
The Mekong River, the world’s 12th-longest river, has many dams upstream, but much of the lower Mekong still flows freely, allowing sediments, fish and nutrients to move freely. But two proposed hydropower projects in Cambodia could be the “final straw,” hampering the lower Mekong’s flow, researchers say. Mangroves and sustainable shrimp farms ring Isla Escalante in Ecuador, near where the Rio Guayas, the national river of Ecuador, flows west into the Pacific Ocean. The farms rely on the river’s health and its ability to flow naturally. CREDIT: © Antonio Busiello, WWF-US
This newly constructed hydropower dam on the Congo River, the second-longest in Africa after the Nile, may be a sign of things to come, as several large hydropower projects are planned for the fast-flowing river. CREDIT: © Jaap van der Waarde, WWF-Netherlands
The Luangwa River in Zambia, now one of the longest free-flowing rivers in Africa, winds through South Luangwa National Park, a haven for myriad wildlife such as elephants, leopards, giraffes, hippopotamus and buffalo. The river basin is also home to 25 chiefdoms. But a proposed dam and reservoir would flood about 30 percent of the length of the river within the park, including one entire chiefdom, and would cut through a wildlife corridor connecting the park with the Lower Zambezi National Park. You really are psychic or telepathic. You can read my mind! This is like the nth strike! I was gonna blog about that in a while.
Four or five years ago, I was supposed to dye my hair in platinum blonde or with a "surprise hidden rainbow" (nothing political; and I'm not gay; just because I love all colorful things; I can't pick one, so I thought to myself, "Why not all?! Let's go crazy! #roygbivp for the win!") underneath my black hair like this:
It was a requirement for each of my classmates and I to make distinguishable changes in our appearance on our fourth year as communication students enrolled in a TV Workshop course.
Instead of dying it, I chopped my long hair in a super short bob cut to donate for wigs and since I was kind of brokenhearted at the time because of a stupid crush and so many other things. 😆
Also, apart from not being able to afford professional services or good quality hair dyes nor do I have the time to do it myself, I was actually too chicken to make sudden drastic changes with my natural hair color since my mom warned me that the chemicals in hair dyes are strong. I'm just scared of hair bleaching that I'll damage my hair strands and cause chunks of it to fall out.
Why do I have an odd feeling that they had a nickname for me which was "walking rainbow"? 🤔🚶🏻♀️🌈
People probably thought I was going to ladlad (Filipino for "coming out of the closet"). 🤣
So far, the only "risky" things I have done to my hair were perming, hair relaxing, hair rebonding, and just one session of burgundy hair cellophane.
Other than that, I have given up with altering the state of my tresses since nine years ago and just embraced its natural form.
I just give it extra TLC with shampoo and conditioner and occasional DIY hair spa treatments such as soaking it with extra virgin coconut oil for at least 30 minutes or up to a few hours before taking a bath. It's what I would like to call "deep hair conditioning." 😂🥥💧
Don't you think the man has more luscious hair than me? 😍
My sister wanted to pluck every silver hair strand I have, but I love them. It's where I get my "wisdom" powers and strength from. ❤
Deal with it. 😎
