“Y/N, is this true,” the host asks, “that you did all your own stunts in the movie?”
The audience and the other celebrities cheer for you, and your face goes red. “Well, uh,” you stumble a bit. “Uh, yes. Well, kind of. I mean, I didn’t do all my own stunts; some were simply too dangerous for me to do, and the studio insisted on doubles. But most of it is me, yes.”
“We’ve got a clip here,” the host offers. “It’s not from the movie itself: it’s, like, behind the scenes footage of you in training, doing all your moves and things.”
“Oh, god, okay...”
You watch with an odd fascination, and some embarrassment, as you, the other guests, and the audience all watch you limbering up in your Lycra leotard, almost dripping in sweat, as you perform handstands, rolls, somersaults, back-flips, and leaps and dives around erected structures.
At the end of the clip, the audience gives a hearty applause, and the other celebrities offer words of praise, insisting that they could never do those moves themselves.
“Have you always been able to do that?” one guest asks.
You laugh awkwardly. “No!” You realise you need to add more, so you explain. “As a child, I was never really athletic or sporty. My family was quite bookish and nerdy - my brother and sister were both Head Boy and Head Girl, and I volunteered in the library, you know... But in my teens, the first Assassins Creed game came out, and I was an immediate fan. I loved it, I played it all the time! And in the game, you can make your character climb and run and jump and dive, and all sorts of really exciting things that I could never even dream of doing.
“So, a few years down the line, I become an actress, and I do all these parts and plays and TV...But I never really did my own stunts, I always used doubles. Partly because I was afraid of getting hurt, but mostly because I’ve never been very good at physical stuff. I mean, I used to get out of puff walking up a hill!
“But then my agent calls me some time about two years ago, and says that there’s going to be an Assassins Creed movie, and would I like to be in it. And I knew immediately that I had to do it. I’ve loved the games for so long, I’ve played them all a dozen times through, I have all the guidebooks and collectors’ items...It’s quite sad, really.” The audience titters a bit.
“So, my agent and I are in talks with the Assassins Creed people, and we’re talking about stunts. Because this movie has a lot of fights and climbing and action in it, they needed to know how much of it I could, or would, do myself.” You pause for a second, remembering the meeting. “And they asked me, kind of, just on the off-chance, ‘can you do any climbing or free-running?’ And I don’t know why - I must have been having a stroke or something! - but I immediately said ‘yes!’ with no hesitation. ‘Can you free-run?’ ‘Yes!’”
The audience is laughing now, as are the other guests. The host asks through chuckles, “And could you?”
“No! Of course I couldn’t! And I could just feel my agent glaring daggers at the side of my head and I refused to look at her until we got into the car on the way home. We, we sat in this really awkward silence for about ten minutes, and she starts to say something - presumably to shout at me - when I just say: ‘We have 12 months to turn me into a free-runner. We need to make this happen. I need to be in this movie, and I need to do my own stunts.’
“So, we find the best free-runners in the world, explain the situation to them, wait while they laugh at me for about ten minutes, and then got to work. They helped me with balance and flexibility and stamina... I trained with them for four hours every day, for 12 months,” The audience ‘ooh’s’ in sympathy, “And they taught me the running and the climbing and dives, all of it.
“So,” you finish with a shrug, “I’m now a free-runner, and I love it!”
