We envision a world without cages. But every day tens of thousands of Black mamas and caregivers languish in cages simply because they cannot afford bail.

60% of people in local women’s jails have not even been convicted of a crime and are awaiting trial and 80% of them are parents. These Black women, femmes, and gender-nonconforming folks—Black mamas and caregivers—are often without support or a safety net when they are condemned to a cage. 

Since 2017, National Bail Out has freed over 500 Black mamas and caregivers from cages and provided services ranging from long-term housing to grief and trauma counseling. 

This Mother’s Day, we’ll be freeing as many Black mamas and caregivers as possible so that they can come home to their families and communities. 

We’re bailing our people out in Lubbock, Texas; Miami, Florida; Orlando, Florida; Los Angeles, California; Atlanta, Georgia; Camp Springs, Maryland; Las Vegas, Nevada; Nashville, Tennessee; Kansas City, Missouri; Jackson, Mississippi; Dothan, Alabama; and Durham, North Carolina.

The flowers are protea, dandelion, black eyed susan, chamomile, and dill which represent transformation, overcoming hardship, justice, patience in adversity, and power against evil respectively!

100 Black Moms Freed on Mother’s Day Thanks to Nationwide Bail Out Campaign

In their largest bail out effort to date, the National Bail Out collective announced Tuesday morning that their third annual Mother’s Day campaign freed 100 black mothers—and raised an additional $1 million to set even more incarcerated women free.

The organization’s landmark achievement was part of the third annual Black Mama’s Bail Out campaign. In the week leading up to Mother’s Day, the coalition of black-led organizations, activists and lawyers led events in 35 different cities across the U.S. to raise funds for—and awareness about—cash bail, a system which keeps many low-income defendants behind bars simply because they don’t have the money to free themselves before trial.

“One hundred moms were able to spend the holiday with their families. One hundred communities are one step closer to healing because they’ve been reunited with caregivers,” said Erika Maye, a Deputy Senior Director at Color Of Change, one of the dozens of organizations involved in the bail out collective, in a statement.
