It had been hours since the fighting began and the end was no where in sight. Everything seemed hopeless to Jon Snow- But something kept pushing him to keep going. Once he got into the walls of Winterfell everything was complete chaos. Everywhere he looked there were wights screaming and climbing over each other to kill... everything. He managed to fight his way to right outside of the Godswood when he heard Viscerions screech growing close and the dragon landed right in his way. He managed to duck for cover from the blue flame just in time to before realizing that there was a child hiding amongst all of the chaos. His blood ran cold when he made the connection- when the Night King raised the dead- the crypts were no longer safe.
He ran over to where the kid was hiding and took out a number of wights that were closing in on the little girl. The girl was only about four or five, with long dark curly hair. She was wearing wildling robes and he even though he didn’t recognize her, he felt almost as if he knew her. He immediately pulled the little girl in his arms and held her tight. “It’s okay...” he managed to say to the sobbing child who was burying her face in his neck. “I’ve got you- I’ll protect you...” he said before turning his attention back to fighting the wights.
The fighting continued for a while and Jon fought as hard as he could with only one hand available. The moment the dead fell and he knew the fighting was over he sheathed Longclaw and wrapped his other arm around the shaking and sobbing child. “It’s- it’s okay...” he managed to croak out still in shock himself. “We-we’ll find your mom, everything’s okay now.” He tried to comfort the scared little girl. He eventually got her to stop sobbing but she still clung tightly to him and trembled as he walked around Winterfell trying to find her mother.
He wandered around Winterfell and was beginning to think her mother had died when the small girl immediately gasped and started to scream “Mommy!“ at the top of her lungs. She pushed away from Jon and he nearly dropped her as he set her on the ground and watched her run to her mother. He went to follow her to her mother when the world stopped. The little girl had run right into the arms of a woman who was dead... a woman he watched die... the only woman he ever truly loved... he stood there staring at her and felt his eyebrows furrow. “Y-Ygritte... is that really you?” He asked thinking he was just in completely shock.
