Remember to #ChanceItLA on Free and PWYC
Usually, a few podcasts into the fringe season we’ll remind listeners about the free and PWYC (Pay What You Can) section of the Hollywood Fringe shows. But, this year we’re doing that PSA before the previews even start.

Now, there are shows which are free/PWYC throughout the whole Fringe, but during previews there is an influx of such shows.
For those who are reading this and are new to the Fringe culture and/or theatre scene and wondering: “Why are they only making some of the shows free/PWYC?” Here is an answer:
Welcome! (Your answer is in part 2, fear not.) We hope you enjoy whatever you see - dive into it, if you read about something that interests you- CHANCE IT! ;) If you see one show that’s not your cup of tea, try something else. The best thing about the Hollywood Fringe is there are so many different productions, it’s a great way to dip your toes into theatre. And when you discover something you like, there will probably be more of it. Also, remember there is theatre in LA: all year long.
The actual answer is here, in two parts:
Because people want their art to be seen and when someone starting out or has a difficult time slot to fill - this is the best way to get people to come and see the show.
From the practical marketing side: they’d like you to give a (hopefully good) review on the fringe site - to help set them apart from the other 350+ productions going on. You’ll get an email asking to leave a review - don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be long: honest and concise is always a good approach.
For those of you that didn’t TL;DR this and need the link: Free/PWYC Hollywood Fringe shows can be found at http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/free
