Favorite songs of March
This post is dedicated to Darrin who asked me about my favorite songs of this March.Of course, the ones listed below were not all released in March, but I chose the ones that for some reason were "important" in March for me:
"Scrappy" by Arrison Kirby from Aries. I actually listened this song for the first time in Febraury, but as I didn't make a list of my favorite songs I listened during February I decided to add it to this list; also mainly because I listened a lot his album during March as I wrote a review of it, which will be hopefully published in the next issue of the online magazine of BS+HR. What I most like about this album ,and especially about this song, is how the music act as disguise of the lyrics, how it all seems to be a farce of a depressing side of him, which for what I read actually has to do with the zodiac sign Aries. Arrison Kirby plans to release a series of album all about the zodiac and this one is the first one. Listen to the song here.
"La Boquilla" by Bomba Estéreo from Blow Up! I still haven't listened to this album completely, but I've been discovering its songs one by one. When I listened the other day to this one I was truly amazed at how good it is. Singer/rapper Liliana Saumet starts singing "Mi África, mía" ("My Africa, mine") demostrating the influences that the African rhythms have in their music and then she does what she knows how to do, that is to combine rapping with singing. Listen to it here and if you like it, watch this great performance live at KEXP here.
"Winter Has Come" by Fireflies from At Home. I don't know how I came acorss Fireflies, probably because of my constant search for new artists. I downloaded his newest record a few days afo and I enjoyed it a lot. The songs on it feel like home, they are very warm. Listen to the full album here.
"Pile of Books" by Freeman Gray. This is another new artist that I've been enjoying a lot. This track for some reason transmit me a lot of peace. Listen and download it for free here.
"Wisdom of the Working World" by Little Paper Cone from Nuwanda. Well, I guess I also should have included this song in the list of February, but the truth is that I spent a lot of time trying to get into this album (I already talked about that here and here). This song has called my attenton: I like how frustated the main vocals sound and contrast with the backing vocals which sound very frenetic, but actually at the end there are no backing and main vocals because both are equally imporant. Well, the work with the vocals is one of my favorite things of this album. Also, if you like songs that build very slowly, then maybe you will like this one. Listen to this song and the full album here.
"Spaceship Coupe" by Justin Timberlake from The 20/20 Experience. If I had to do right now the list of the best albums of 2013, this would have the first place. I seriously adore this album, and with each listen I can discover new things of it. Right now, I'm obsessed with this song; Justin sounds charming in this one, being mellow and sweet but not in excess as in "Mirrors". Listen to the song here and if you still haven't listened to the album, what are you waiting to do so?
"The Fall" by Rhye from Woman. This is also another record that I've been enjoying a lot; I listened to it three or four times and I like it a lot as whole, though it is true that I have problem in differentiating each of the songs. "The Fall" is one of the few that can stood out from the rest, because it's more danceable. Yes, I also thought that the singer was a woman. Listen and watch the music video here.
"Brenninsteinn" by Sigur Rós from Kveikur. When I listened to the advance track of Valtari I wasn't the least excited about it, and actually I only listened to Valtari this year. But if Kveikur is like "Brenninsteinn", then it will be a whole different new sound for Sigur Rós, who were already too comfortable in that kind of celestian and heavenly music. Listen and watch the video here.
"The Ones We Hurt the Most" by Stornoway from Tales from Terra Firma. I would say this is the darkest song on the album, but still conserves the gentleness thanks to Brian Briggs vocals. I actually already wrote about this song in a post for The Music Writers Collective, thant you can read here.
"Los Días Raros" by Vetusta Morla from Mapas. Although I've been listening to this band for half year more or less, I only listened to their second album some weeks ago when they announced that they will be playing in Argentina. The opening track of Mapas, is exactly that: an opening track. It is the type of songs that was made to be that and that you can't imagine being in other part of the tracklist. Singer Pucho shows his vocal abilities when he finishes with a waterfall of "ohhh ohh"s. Listen to it here and if you like it watch this amazing perforamnce with a beautiful orchestra here.
