Intuit has struck a $100 million-plus deal with OpenAI to bring AI into its financial products like TurboTax and QuickBooks.
Heads up warning for anybody who uses TurboTax to file taxes, now they’re shoving chatGPT into it so absolutely avoid using it so you don’t get fucked over by AI slop. Seeing people suggest FreeTaxUSA or straight paper forms as alternates.

If you're in the same income bracket as me (and let's be honest, we've been pretty good about chasing away the billionaires), you should NEVER use Turbotax
Turbotax pays a loot of money in lobbying to ensure that your taxes stay complicated, so that you have to use them to file your taxes. The thing is! The IRS has a webpage that helps you find a service to do your taxes for free! They aren't allowed to advertise it (Thanks Intuit), but it is the cheat code to make your April 15th so much easier.

I have personally used FreeTaxUSA off of the IRS's recommendation and I highly recommend it.
Remember: Lobbying is Bribery under any other name, and the actions of Turbotax and other corporate lobbyists are contemptible. but at least taxes don't have to suck as much as they want it to
Tax season coming up, remember free tax USA is free for federal taxes for any AGI and is just $15 for state if you make more than $48k Adjusted Gross Income
I always do my federal through them and then my state has its own system I use for my state taxes so it's completely free for me to do my taxes.
There's also other options on the IRS website that might be better for you in particular so check it out.

Just finished filing my taxes, which usually has me on the verge of a panic attack... This time it was okay. That post going around about switching from TurboTax is valid, but the IRS recommends a bunch of options and they are not equal.
If you’re stressed about changing, I can now recommend using FreeTaxUSA. It was very similar to Turbo in the interface but it didn’t scam me. It can pull all the data from your Turbo tax returns (Turbo makes it a puzzle to download the PDF, but it’s there for free. Note to future self: always download when you can.)
At the most, you’ll pay like $16 for your state return, but they actually tell you that at the start and along the way. Wayyy cheaper than TurboTax and I felt like the explanations were clearer and got me through faster.
If you have simple taxes and make below 51k, it’s totally free.
I have complicated taxes and I was amazed it actually made short work of that.
Anyway, if you’re putting it off again like me… you can do it.

They found me an extra $700 that H&R Block wouldn’t give me without paying them an additional $50.
H&R Block wanted to charge me $120 to file my taxes it only cost me $22 on free tax USA (have investments so I use deluxe).
A friend of mine who is a business owner has been telling me to use FreeTaxUSA for years but I didn’t for whatever reason. I will never be going back now.
