DON’T CENSOR ___ The censorship of female nipples comes as a consequence of misogyny and double standards: males see the female nipple as inherently sexual, making public display of female nipples “indecent” (because guess who is in charge?), whereas male breasts and nipples are not considered in any way “indecent.” I think more than societal conditioning leading males to sexualize and objective women’s chests, perhaps there is some deeper evolutionary situation at work that causes men to become aroused at the sight of women’s breasts, even more so their nipples. The answer to this question of nipple censorship then might come down to two things: embracing our sexual nature as humans, men and women equally, and respecting boundaries, which means not using sexual arousal as an excuse to treat women whose nipples are showing with any form of disrespect, thereby making women uncomfortable for a man’s lack of self control. The problem is that now we’ve all been trained to be uncomfortable with sex, and to a larger extent, women’s sexuality, and if that could somehow be changed, the nipple double standard would become obsolete. Sexuality is not something to be ashamed of, not for either gender. It’s normal, healthy. Women are not baby-making machines; we enjoy sex too, and why should there be a problem with that? Society’s acceptance of that would help our cultural evolution to true fairness, making it so that men could see female nipples without feeling uncomfortable, like they’ve done something wrong. Normalizing female nipples doesn’t necessarily mean that they would no longer be viewed sexually, only that the context of seeing them and getting aroused would shift, because naturally, if it is normal to see them, the sexual response will be reduced. It’s a long road, but I’m going to take it, because equality is a human right, and that includes gender equality. Free the mf nipple. End hypocrisy and double standards that lead to female sexuality as cause for ostracization. Make the world fair and safe for all. ___ 👸🏽: @jessandthesea 📷: @kidpistola ___ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #freethenipplemovement #freethenipplecampaign #censorship (at Mexico City, Mexico)
DON’T LOOK ___ Why is it that female nipples are so controversial? Because global culture has been defined by men, and that culture has made women’s sexuality a sin, as women’s breasts have been over-sexualized for all of modern history. So, seeing female nipples has become associated with sex. Yet female nipples don’t have any more to do with sex than male nipples. They serve a function, to feed their young, which has also (ridiculously) become a point of female ostracization with regard to breastfeeding in public. I’m sure Freud would have some choice words about this issue, particularly with respect to the connection little boys have to their mommies, which can sometimes extend into adulthood in an unhealthy way, which can cause them to have sexual feelings toward their mothers, fetishizing sucking on their mother’s nipples like young babies again. It might be no surprise with that in mind that female nipples have become sexualized then, especially knowing that men as a group have historically claimed that their sexuality is wild and uncontrollable, allowing them to get away with things like rape and other kinds of sexual assault and harassment, not to mention punishing and shaming women for any expression of their sexuality. This isn’t a claim that all men are like this, or that all men shame/sexualize female nipples so far as to make them feel so uncomfortable in public if they are showing that women now think their nipples showing is shameful without even having to be reminded. Still, the root of this is the male gender. We are taught to hide our nipples starting at a young age, and we are taught that women with their nipples showing are “slutty.” We are taught that we need to wear bras to be in public, and that extends until the day we die. The thing is, sometimes We don’t want to wear a bra. Women’s nipples should not need to be hidden, whether or not they are viewed in a sexual way. Women should be free to express their sexuality, and free to show their nipples in public without feeling like sexual prey. They are just nipples. Just like male nipples. Get over it already. ___ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #freethenipplemovement #freethenipplecampaign (at Mexico City, Mexico)
