Channel 4 launches two new HD channels on Freeview

Great news, Channel 4 is launching two new HD channels on Freeview on 1st July 2014.

The two new HD channels – Channel 4+1 HD and 4seven HD – will launch on channels 110 and 111 respectively and anyone who can already receive channels including BBC Four HD (channel 106) and Al Jazeera HD (channel 108) will be able to receive the new Channel 4 services when they launch.

New channels launching on Freeview HD are actually MHEG applications to deliver IPTV to Freeview HD users. They can deploy a single codebase on multiple different platforms and bypass the various app-stores while they are at it, at the expense of paying for a LCN and the extra burden of Ofcom regulation

Interesting strategy, which I can potentially see being used by broadcasters with a bouquet of channels they are willing to broadcast free to air, but the costs of purchasing space on a multiplex makes it not financially viable (e.g. CBS Chellozone who already broadcast their channels free to air on Freesat, but not on Freeview)
