Anya/Raven AU for frehly
Raven drives across the desert to see her long time friend and on-again off-again (but currently off) boyfriend, Finn. On the way, she drives past a broken down car on the road, a woman standing outside of it, not doubt boiling in the midday sun. Being an experienced mechanic, she figures she may be able to help, so she pulls over and offers her assistance, which the woman - who introduces herself as Anya - accepts. Upon inspection, she finds that the problem is easily fixable, but not with what she has with her. Being a good Samaritan, she offers to drive Anya into town to pick up the necessary part for the job. As she goes to get back in the car, however, Anya pulls a gun on her and says she needs her car. Rather than get herself shot, she steps aside to let Anya take the car. But then Anya looks over her shoulder and is suddenly shoving Raven into the car, telling her "get in."
Raven does as she asks, and climbs over to the passenger side. Anya starts speeding off, and when Raven looks behind them, she sees why. There's another car, quickly approaching them, which a man hanging out the side, holding what Raven quickly sees is a gun. Anya asks if she's ever shot a gun before, and when Raven says no, she tells her to take hold of the wheel then. Raven then steers the bumpy desert road from the passenger seat as Anya leans out the window, shooting at the men behind them. they eventually make it out of the chase, but only once the other car has crashed into a rock wall.
Anya gets back inside the car after that, reclaiming control of the wheel, and Raven freaks out, asking what just happened. Anya says she recently got on the bad side of some very bad people, and leaves it at that.
They make their way to a nearby motel and Raven freaks out a little when she sees the state of her car. Once they're in their motel room, she tries asking Anya again who those men were, and why they were shooting at them, but instead of answering her, Anya goes into the bathroom, and a moment later, Raven hears the shower running.
Raven soon feels the exhaustion of a car chase and a few hours worth of driving hit her, and she lays down with the intention of resting her eyes for a little bit, but she ends up falling asleep for what must be a few hours, because when she wakes up, it's already dark out. She can hear hushed voices coming from the other side of the room. One she recognizes as Anya's, but the other she's sure she's never heard before. The voice tells Anya that people are coming for her. Raven can just make out in the darkness what appears to be an axe at the man's throat as Anya tells him that when they come, she'll be ready. Raven continues to pretend to sleep until after the man has left the motel room.
They both get up early the next morning, and Anya tells Raven that she should get out of here before things get messy, but Raven refuses, having already decided that she's going to do what she can to help Anya out of this situation. Anya hands her a bat and shoves her into the bathroom once she accepts that Raven won't leave, telling her not to come out until she says it's safe.
It doesn't take long before she hears the door being kicked in, and the sounds of fighting - Anya grunting, men screaming, the kitschy decor of the motel room being knocked around and destroyed. Then she hears Anya shout in pain, and a man telling her that this is the end. She can't fight her way out of this one. She knows it's probably a bad idea, but Raven cracks the door open to get a look at what's happening, and sees the man has Anya's arms behind her back, and one of his arms around her neck.
But more importantly, his back is to Raven. She glances between him and the bat in her hand and, despite knowing how reckless this is, risking her own ass to help out a woman she barely knows, she sneaks out of the bathroom, comes up behind the man, and swings the bat as hard as she can at his head. He crumples to the ground and Anya frees herself from his grip. Raven would go so far as to say that Anya almost looks impressed when she looks up at her. Unfortunately, it's not long before Anya says that they have to get out of here. It won't be long before more men are sent to get her.
As they're loading their bags back into the car, Raven decides it couldn't hurt to ask again what Anya did to get into this situation. Anya sighs and says she supposes it's only fair to tell her now. They get into the car and Anya explains that when she was young, she was in a tough situation, and this man took her in. He was surprisingly kind, considering his lifestyle. But his son wasn't so kind. And once the man died, his son took over the family business, and terrorized Anya. Finally she got up the nerve to get back at him using the one thing he loved most in this world: his prized ostrich.
