@freighttraininmybrain — I am so glad you asked! I have recs for books that will definitely help more than I ever could, as I’m mostly just fucking around on the internet as a writer and I don’t have any creative writing lesson plans developed. However, as an editor, studying narrative structure is important! Especially for any developmental editing. I highly recommend the “Save the Cat” books (for novels and for screenplays), as well as “Wired for Story” and “Self-Editing for Fiction Writers.” What’s your question about it, specifically? I’ll do my best to give you the answer you deserve.
As far as my preference, I like writing (and reading) in the past tense. I don’t full-on despise the present tense, and sometimes it’s done in such a way that I find myself even more drawn into the story. There is less of a division between writer and reader. But, in general, I find storytelling to be so reflective that the past tense just plain makes more sense to me. A con of present tense is that you can be limited in your scope as a writer. A con of past tense is that you can remove the reader from the experience in a way that makes them more of a voyeur than an active participant. The pros are the same: Either tense can provide valuable insight into the motivations of the characters that can’t be found in the other.
