Hi!! A coworker gave me his 3 yr old male ball python -- he didn't have space or time for it. I've upgraded him from a 30 gal to a 75 gal aquarium, he has a cardboard box hide and a glass dish for a water bowl (I'll get him better stuff on my next paycheck). I'm wondering what lighting/heating you recommend -- I know beardies have particular light requirements and that's what I'm familiar with. I'm also wondering what little-known ball python habitat tips you have! I wanna be a good snake mom!
I’m glad he’s with you! A 75 gallon aquarium sounds really nice. A few more hides and ground cover is important. Easiest way to do ground cover is with a viney fake plant, just so he feels more secure moving around. A couple more cardboard boxes- one at the warm, one at the cool end, and one in the middle- will be appreciated! A humid hide is also nice. You can make one of those out of a plastic box (like a tupperware container). Cut an opening in it, pop in some wet paper towel, and you’re good to go! This is gonna be super important for shedding. As for lights: They don’t need ‘em! You can use one to establish a day/night cycle, but these guys are usually out at night. Heat lamps are definitely a no-go, because they suck the humidity right out of everything. You can use a ceramic heat emitter, an undertank heater attached to a thermostat, heat tape/cable (again attached to a thermostat), or my absolute favorite, a radiant heat panel (also attached to a thermostat). Thermostats can be cheap- you can get one on Amazon for nineteen bucks if you have prime. You can also get a more expensive one, but I’m a fan of the cheapies made for plants. It’s better for your snake to have a thermostat and it’s better for you- thermostats can seriously help cut down on the ol’ electric bill.
Another tip, since you upgraded in size- you might want to cover the sides and back of the tank! You can use fake plants, paper taped to the outside, cardboard- anything to block the visual field. It’ll help the snake feel more secure. Also, since a 75 is kinda tall, you should use that space! Add some sturdy branches to climb and maybe even some ledges! Magnaturals makes good ones, and you can also buy some that are glued to the tank with silicon. But I like the magnaturals ones better, just because you can actually move them around for cleaning. You can also make some yourself- search for “DIY vivarium backgrounds” for ideas! My other favorite tip: don’t bother with foggers for humidity or anything fancy. Go to the hardware store and get one of these. They are amazing. You’ll also want to get a digital hygrometer to keep an eye on humidity- the dial ones are a pain in the neck.Good luck!
