Hey! So my next writing project will be in French (the current one is in English). I was initially thinking about getting it published in Suisse-Romande as they are MANY little publishing houses. But then, recently I've been thinking that maybe it isn't a good idea as yes I might have more chances of getting 'easily' published but my book might not make it in a bigger market. Many Swiss Romand writer (like Joel Dicker) prefer getting published in France. What do you think?
From a quick research, it seems that a successful book published in Suisse-Romande will sell between 500 to 1K copies. That doesn’t really seem like a lot compared to successful sales in France, and those books are very unlikely to reach French readers, except for a few specialized bookshops in Paris.
Of course, it also depends on the kind of book you’re interested in publishing, if you’re thinking Romande Literature then French publishers will be less likely to pick up your book and your true target would be the Suisse-Romande readers. But it doesn’t hurt to query with French publishers as they rely on a pretty successful marketing machine to support their authors, and their books are more likely to be well placed at bookstores, advertised in critics magazines or radio shows, and of course there are the French Literary prices that can boost a writer’s career. But the French market is also harder to pierce through as there are so many new novels published each year and only a handful truly becomes known.
I think if you wish for your book to have a chance to make it to the biggest audience you have to try for French publishers, and nothing stops you from sending queries to a few Suisse-Romande houses that you like to see if they would be interested, and broaden your search to more Suisse-Romande houses if the French publishers don’t seem interested.
My thoughts on where to get published are most often than not, send it to every house you think might be interested in it, no matter the country, but when the answers come back, you have to decide where you want your career to go:
Do you want a more local career, to be a recognized Suisse-Romance writer with few sales (and probably not be able to make a living out of your writing) or do you want to try the bigger French market, at the risk of being forgotten amidst the 600 new books published every year?
I hope I somehow helped and didn’t leave you with more questions than answers. :)
