Putting aside the fact that the ml crew keeps whitewashing characters and not making even the bare minimum to represent other cultures, I just noticed something.
The show doesn't even have proper French representation.
Practically all the landmarks that we see are buildings at least a hundred years old and without counting the Eiffel Tower very few of them appear in more than a single episode; and if that the case they mostly reappear as background. For example the Arc de Triomphe is a personal favorite and a popular tourist attraction. It appears seven times (4 in season one, 3 in season 2, one of those times as background, and once in season 3) and it's one of the lucky ones.
Alya's mom is a chef, Marinette's parents own a bakery and I can count with my fingers how many French dishes make an appearance.
But the worst from my point of view is that thanks to Astruc&co screwing up with the timeline (they have time to make an animated movie about the heroes but not enough to change the school year, that makes sense) they erased any French or Parisian celebrations.
We have Valentine's Day, two Christmas specials (only one of them 'official') and two invented holidays. That's all.
A quick search brought dozens of holidays, events and places; next are some of my favorites. Feel free of add more and please correct me if I'm wrong in any of them.
"Fete des Rois": During the first Sunday after New Year bakeries sell 'galettes' (round, flat pastries filled with buttery almond paste); inside one of this pastries there's a small figurine and if you find it in your portion you'll be crowned King or Queen. Put Chloé stealing the figurine from the person who found it and you have the plot for an episode.
Chinese New Year: I feel really stupid for not thinking on this event before and it's made my blood boil. Marinette, the freaking protagonist, is half Chinese. How hard's to bring the one Chinese holiday that everyone's knows about and which will put that part of her heritage in the spotlight?
Bastille Day: The French National holiday, celebrates the 14 July of 1789 and the French Revolution.
Paris Marathon: Look at me in the eyes and tell me that Le Chien Kim wouldn't be interested in this event.
Fete de la Musique: on the day of the summer solstice, June 21, free street concerts and parties throughout the city, a.k.a. the perfect place to find Nino, Luka, Kitty section and Jagged Stone.
Open Air Cinema at la Villette: On July 21 it hosts the annual open-air cinema festival. It shows old and new releases, French and foreign films. This sound like something Nino would love.
Paris Fashion Week: I know it already happened in Style Queen but it happens twice yearly, with a Spring/Summer edition and an Autumn/Winter edition (And to be honest, if you told me that Style Queen was simply Gabriel launching his new collection I would believe you).
This is a French show, made by French people and it takes place in the French capital city. Change the background to any big city, the Eiffel Tower for the iconic landmark of said city and no one would notice the difference.
I'm not asking much; just two or three French real events shouldn't be an issue. Even a simple mention would be enough.
Do the creators really need to hire an expert to make an accurate representation of their own country?
OMG!!! Martin Fourcade, our beloved French sportsman just got his fourth gold medal in Olympic Games. He’s just marvellous! That guy FUCKING DID IIIIT! Ok, he got two gold medals in Sotchi but he got his two others at Pyeongchang. He outsmarted our greatest hopes!!!!!!!!!!
Actually going through the Tatara Tales quest and I'm worried about Fontaine, now.
Yes, us Frenchies still speak like it's the 19th centuries and we put expressions in our own language everywhere. Didn't you learn that at school ? =')
They avoided being too culturally cliché so far. Let's say it's an early version and poor try to make an NPC sound so foreign.
