Hi, sorry to bug you I just saw your bnha post about the transphobia and homophobia and I was confused. The only character I know that is confirmed transgender is the male member of the pussycats (i cannot for the life of me remember his name) and I don't remember any kind of transphobia? I try to keep an eye out for stuff like that and I was wondering if you could point it out for me. Oh and I'm completely confused on the homophobia part please point that out too. sorry for being a pain!
hey it’s no problem! his name is tora (tiger!) and the issues i ran into w/ it was a) initial reactions from other characters to tora’s appearance (saying he’s confused about his gender) b) his design in general (a super muscle dude in a skirt + in an all-girl group is meant to be a transmisogynistic visual gag) and c) the thailand joke (”he was once female. then he went to thailand.”), which has to do w/ transphobic views about the country + the trans people that live there and didn’t come across as a positive line about him being trans or transitioning in another country
the homophobia comes into play w/ the character kenji hikiishi aka magne aka the dude w/ the huge magnet carried around on his shoulders. he’s drawn as a gay caricature and written like one and then is brutally murdered for no real reason
i think the series as a whole needs to be analyzed more carefully since this is now my second message of someone missing the transphobia and homophobia in the series. and some of it is hard to put into words because a lot of it is visual and needs context from engaging w/ other homophobic media and seeing how these stereotypes are used in games/movies/anime/manga etc.
i think its also important to realize that just because a certain minority or identity is represented in something doesn’t automatically make the media better for it... in the case of bnha these identities are used as visual jokes and thats not a good thing
