Peter Molyneux - GODUS
It was only a few days ago when we last heard about 22cans studio father figure - P. Molyneux and now The Man is back with another project. This time, as with many developers these days, he has turned to Kickstarter to seek funding. The game concept is - Godus a god game as we remember them from earlier era of gaming when Molyneux created the god game genre.
"It’s an innovative reinvention of Populous, the original god game and delivers exciting global co-operation, competition, creation and destruction to a whole new generation.."
Back in those days, I didn't much like that type of games. A normal strategy game was better any time but there certainly was a market for the power trip that Populous and other similar games offered.
Are the grandfathers of games design destroying the wonderful thing that Tim Schafer started - crowd funded games? There are some who think so and to be truthful I do too sometimes. The rapid expansion of suck projects on Kickstarter and other similar sites is over saturating the market. So far fans seem eager to share their wallet contents to just see their childhood favorite remade again. But its only a matter of time that all this collapses. For one thing fans are helping to make the game and get no part in the gains the game will later rake in. They act as investors but without most of the benefits that usually come with it.
The whole process is putting a damper on creative progress as well since all great minds seem to be bent on re-creating old games and ideas. So cause for concern is definitely there, but ultimately it all comes down to the market. As long as there is demand, there most certainly will be supply.
