Warum Willkommenswoche in der UK cooler ist als zu Hause ...

... darum. Es gibt einfach unfassbar viele Freebies und Give-Aways, von Notizbüchern und T-Shirts über vegane Essensboxen hin zu Pizzagutscheinen und Kondomen. Hier im Bild ein Teil von dem, was ich mitgenommen habe und ein Bruchteil von dem, was man mitnehmen konnte. Man sieht, Studis sind Kapital. Sie geben Geld aus für Alkohol, Essen, sie gehen feiern, sie brauchen Mobilfunkverträge und machen Online-Shopping. Kein Wunder, dass auf unserer offiziellen Welcome Week zwei Tage die Hauptattraktion die “Fresher’s Fair” war, bei der man sich von Werbestand zu Werbestand schlängeln konnte.

Meine neu gefundene Clique* und ich waren entsprechend enthusiastisch. *bestehend aus zwei Spanierinnen, einer Französin und einem Franzosen

Alle anderen Erstsemester oder International Students auch, dementsprechend voll war es.

Weiter ging es diese Woche dann mit der Society Fair, bei der sich alle Hochschulgruppen (über 250 Stück) vorstellen und versuchen, neue Mitglieder zu gewinnen. Diese dreitagelange Messe hat mir persönlich noch um einiges besser gefallen, als die kostenlose Pizzagutscheine davor, denn es war wirklich abgefahren was es alles für “Societies” gab. Wer zu viel Zeit hat, kann sich gerne mal auf der Website der Student’s Union die komplette Liste ansehen (hier klicken und dann auf “Search Students Groups” gehen), aber ich hab mal ein paar (!) der verrücktesten für euch rausgesucht:

Disney Society

Hummus Society (trifft sich zum Hummus essen)

Harry Potter Society

Pole Fitness Society

Fetish Society (fragt nicht)

Sikh Society

Vegetarian & Vegan Society

Es gibt praktisch für jedes Land oder jede Ländergruppe eine eigene Society, für sehr viele Sportarten und natürlich auch für jede Menge politische oder gesellschaftlich-engagierte Societies.

Man findet für jedes erdenkliche Interesse eine Gruppe an Studierenden, der man sich anschließen kann, wenn man Gleichgesinnte sucht. Dafür zahlt man eine Mitgliedschaft die ca. 2-30 Pfund pro Jahr uns Society beträgt.

Bin dezent neidisch und hab mich deswegen auch bei viel zu vielen Gruppen in den E-Mailverteiler aufnehmen lassen, z.B. die Student’s Newspaper Redbrick, die International Society, die Mountaneering Society, die Indian Society, die Political Society, die Green Society, die Vegetarian and Vegan Society und natürlich die Hummus Society.

Ähem ja, ein bisschen übermütig. Aber ich habe mich selber schon vor einiger Zeit mit akuter FOMO diagnostiziert (FOMO = fear of missing out, die Angst etwas zu verpassen), und genau die schlägt gerade wieder zu. Entscheiden, wo ich hinwill, kann ich ja noch nächste Woche.

Achso, nächste Woche gehts übrigens endlich los mit Seminaren und Vorlesungen – hatte schon fast vergessen, warum ich hier bin.

Went to the Freshers fair, I got given and I took flyers of societies that I don't think I will go to XD I was looking for two in particular, and I actually went back to the fair three times. Walked around one with a free pizza slice they gave me upon entry, saw the Kpop society and anime society, fangirled, but I wanted to finish my slice before I went XD ate it all, went the second time and that's when I started collecting flyers. I got to the kpop society, and I was greeted by a girl who I thought was in the line to see them! She was so nice, she told me they'd be meeting on Friday for a taster (which I already know I most likely can't do because it's my day off, but I was too happy to say anything) she gave me a little poster of Twice (!!!!!!!!!) and its my most prized possession lol. I got some sparkly makeup on my cheek from a lovely lady at the Burlesque society (one I'm probably not going to but she looked awesome), couldn't see the anime society unfortunately but I went again. Finally got to the anime society, and they have a film night on later but Im not staying past six until tomorrow for a scheduled party, but I'm going to look into more about that one.

So overall, I had a lot of fun. Highly recommend it

why does everyone keep mentioning receiving endless amounts of emails after fresher's fair? can you not remove yourself from mailing lists? (sorry if this is a dumb question, i don't want to get spammed)

Not a dumb question, don’t worry! Yes, you can remove yourself from mailing lists, but sometimes it can be tricky to find the unsubscribe feature, so then you keep getting the emails. However, it’s easy enough most of the time to get yourself off the mailing list (and may well be even easier after the GDPR data protection rules make keeping mailing lists more difficult) so don’t worry about it too much.

The Freshers' Fair on Parker's Piece is also worth checking out during the days that it's on (10-4 on Tuesday and Wednesday) - You'll be able to find out about which societies are available there, which I find are a good way to meet people. There may also be a College specific societies fair too

Yes, very important! Definitely go to the freshers fair, it’s a great way of getting to know what’s on offer at Cam and what you might be interested in. Just watch out - you’ll probably end up signing up for waaaay too many things and being bombarded with emails!
