Meeting new people
As a first year student in university, one of the main things I was worried about was meeting new people and making friends. For obvious reasons (*cough* Covid *cough*) most of the country, and the world, in fact, was in lockdown, and there were a lot of restrictions in place when I first arrived at university. No one outside of your flat was allowed to visit, and students either weren’t allowed or were too scared to visit home. Obviously, students will be students and there were parties taking place, but the whole ordeal was a lot more secretive and risky than it had been in past years.
That being said, I did get lucky with my flatmates. I mean, sure, maybe they aren’t the kinds of people I’d usually go out and make friends with in a different situation. We’re all very different, and sometimes that can lead to miscommunications and misunderstandings. But for the most part, we get along well and have all found our unique ways of helping each other through what really is a difficult time to be a student. This was especially true when we had to quarantine together!
It was only the other day, as I was walking back from the coffee shop with my flatmate and telling her about some mundane memory I’d had of my family - something I’d never bothered to mention to anyone before - that I realized maybe this whole thing hasn’t turned out as bad as I thought.
