This painting, whose sitter is unknown, has a distinguished pedigree, having been in the possession of Stanisław II August Poniatowski, King and Grand Duke of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, among other Polish notables. In 1897, the then-director of the Mauritshuis, Abraham Bredius, discovered it in a Galician castle. In 1910, American steel magnate Henry Clay Frick purchased the painting for £60,000, and it has been in the Frick Collection ever since.
