5 Things You Can Do to Your Flooring to Help You and Your Family Live Healthier
Welcome 2017! It's a new year, a new month, and time to take on fresh beginnings. Whether or not those changes will stick is yet to be seen (we've all had resolutions fall through, after all), but as we enter 2017 with high hopes, there are more than enough healthy ideas to take on – and with gusto!
One of the lesser thought of changes might also be one of the most important; flooring for your home. Believe it or not, dirty or ill-planned floors can be hard on your health, specifically your breathing by what's going in and how it's affecting your body. Even if you're unaware, factors like dirty carpets or vents that are full of allergens can have a negative affect toward your health.
Improve your flooring by:
1. Having Your Carpets Professionally Steam Cleaned
In the world of carpet cleaning, there is a huge array of services and a huge outcome in types of clean. All types of professionals will pitch different options, and it's important to know what you're getting yourself into. Consider that DIY cleaning often won't kill all germs present (or get into deeper layers like the carpet pad), while chemicals can often cause serious allergies or reactions in and of themselves.
To stay on the safe side, opt for steam cleaning, which uses only extremely hot water to get your floors clean. This way you can ensure that germs will be gone, and no foreign chemicals have been introduced into your home.
2. Deep Clean the Baseboards
An often overlooked section of your flooring is the very area that surrounds them – the baseboards. As foot traffic takes place, germs, grime, and more will stick to these sections of your home. Whether you do this yourself or hire a pro, make the effort to get these suckers good and clean. You'll be surprised (and shocked!) about how much dirt was hiding in plain sight. An easy way to clean them without scrubbing off the paint is to use the brush attachment on your vacuum!
3. Replacing the Carpet
If your carpet is on the older side, chances are it’s full of dust mites, dirt, and more. To get rid of these allergens once and for all, consider replacing it with a cleaner alternative, such as hard wood floors, tile, or even new carpets.
4. Upgrade Your Vacuum
A proper vacuum can help make your home far more breathable every time you clean. If your model is cheap or more than a few years old, it might be time to step up your vacuum game for better suction power, and cleaner flooring every single day. Remember to replace filters, bags and empty the canister for optimal suction.
5. Check Your Cleaner(s)
Carpet cleaners, mopping chemicals, and more can all put questionable ingredients onto your walking surface. To easily improve your home's health, consider switching to products that are green, eco-friendly, and won't cause side effects once they come into contact with your body. This is true of those of any age, but especially when babies or young children are present.
