FRIDAY INTRODUCTION . It’s been far too long since I’ve done this - so hello to y'all, I’m Christina a.k.a. BonfireArt 👋 . I’m based in Buenos Aires since 2008, where I live with my husband and two kids. Drawing, and later painting, became my hobby in 2015 . As for some lesser known things about me ⭐ My favorite place to relax on a daily basis is our garden. I love just sitting here with some Mate tea or coffee, watch the greens, the plants and flowers and the sky and reflect on my day ⭐ I just can’t get accustomed to Christmas in summer!! I appreciate my birthday being in spring here in the southern hemisphere and I don’t mind not having to bundle up for new years, but having been born and raised in Germany, Christmas and winter just belong together for me ⭐ I love swimming and being in the water in general. When I was younger, I took lessons in scuba diving and dreamed about filming underwater documentaries ⭐ I never learned how to drive a car and although especially at the beginning of every year I wonder if this will be the year I finally learn it, in more than 40 years I’ve never gotten around to actually do it ⭐ I’d really love to know something more about you too, so write something in the comments if you want. How we stood up for #BLM last year is how we need to show up for our Asian brothers and sisters now. ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾 Instead of our typical #FridayIntroduction we wanted to take a few minutes to use our platform like many of peers here to point out a rampant issue poisoning our society. We cannot be Anti-Racists (which we pride ourselves in being) if we do not speak up against the hate crimes directly targeted at the AAPI community. We can not be fearless advocates for our people if we don't stand for justice for ALL of our people experiencing terrorism. 👇🏽 The 3,800 Reported incidents of anti-Asian hate in the US over the past year (503 in 2021 alone) is despicable and needs to stop. We're making an effort to be more engaging and help the Asian community by volunteering where we can, listening more about this topic from trusted advocates like @hateisavirus @stopasianhate @advancing_justice_atl and @stopaapihate and donating to help the cause. ••• Its a lot of work that needs to be done but We just wanted to take this time to say we see you and we hear you. Hi! It’s Friday (it is, right? 😂) and I’m continuing my story in this next installment of #fridayintroductions 👋 at this point in my story, I had just dropped out of college 😳 which sounds more dramatic than it was honestly—I had only half-heartedly gone in the first place, pretty much by default, so the leaving was less-than-surprising, especially to me. I was freshly 21 and got my first job in the restaurant business, working as a cocktail waitress, starting my stint of 10+ years in that industry. It’s a period of time when I learned tons about wine, made some of my closest lifelong friends and spent arguably too much time out in bars. I was making a tiny bit of art in my free time, painting and collage, but only just enough to remind me that it was something I was into. The word *rudderless* comes to mind. Then, I unexpectedly got pregnant. My partner at the time was an amazing man, and is still one of my aforementioned lifelong friends, but we were definitely not in a place to start a family together; the decision of whether or not to have a child at 25 was a huge wake up call. I decided to have an abortion—a choice I have never regretted and will fight for every woman to have. Accompanying that huge decision was the equally huge recognition that I wanted more out of my life than working a job I was marginally good at and partying afterwards, sleeping until 2pm with just enough time to get ready for my next shift—it felt empty. So I decided to go back to school, but this time I was more focused about things; I actually did some research, visited a few campuses, and ultimately applied to California College of Arts and Crafts for a degree in Graphic Design; I was accepted, and before I knew it was finding an apartment and job in San Francisco, which was a big deal for this country mouse! Hi! It’s me! Nina! 👋 Every couple of weeks I do a #fridayintroduction and am telling pieces of the story of how I became an artist, but today, here’s the basics of NOW: I’m a painter based in #santafenewmexico I’m originally from #thelandofenchantment but have lived half of my 46 years on the West Coast (the pull between NM and CA is great); I’m a self-supporting professional artist, and have shown nationally since 2009; I have a BFA, a couple of awards and a ton of support from the galleries that show my work—I feel beyond lucky that my artwork supports my family and that I get to paint every day, in a beautiful, messy studio, and am living what many would describe as the artist’s dream 🌈🦄 right now, in the middle of a pandemic, that dream feels a little shakey but I’m keeping my head down, staying safe, following the recommendations of social distancing—which are very much just like regular life for me 😬—and making as much art as I can manage 🤞 here’s a picture of me working in aforementioned big, messy studio, captured by @ghostsofgondolin a few weeks ago. You’ll see me working with this palm pattern for a bit, as I’m taking this stay-at-home, travel-is-cancelled, exhibitions-are-postponed opportunity to work on some new ideas.
