Ok so for context my bunk on Sultana was a 3x3x6 box bunk. it had a 2” foam mattees in it that was At LEAST 5 years old. Probably more.
I fit in the bunk exactly. I am only 5’9”, but the cook’s bunk also houses the access box for the sink pump so that took two inches off the total length. I had like three pillows, a Blajhai, and several blankets in there. If there was swell, I would take my duffel bag full of clothes down and shove it up against the door, and the put my bag of dirty laundry and my backpack on the other side, and cocoon myself in place.
I slept so well in that bunk. Sure there was a ship’s knee in the middle of it, but it was warm, it was comfy, it was cozy.
If i wasn’t in the bunk, the settees had cushions on them and the curve of the hull made a lovely backrest. You could even take a nap on them if there wasn’t any programming to do. (you can see crew members lounging comfortably in the example picture. )
Now, I spent the last month of my life helping my parents move their catamaran. It was built in 2020. It cost them several hundreds of thousands of dollars. An obscene amount of money, really, especially considering what they got for it.
The mattress was deeply uncomfortable. The bed was queen sized which meant there was no support in rolling seas (And there were rolling seas aplenty, because instead of riding the waves like a good god-fearing monohull, a catamaran gets thrown around like it’s a fucking raft.)
The salon area was full of sharp edges to bump yourself on and the seating options were limited. If you did choose one of the available seating options, you would end up with a sore ass after about 30 minutes because the foam was about as supportive as the owners.
The counters didn’t have lips. The helm area had a seat that was just the right width to be uncomfortable and the wheel was at just the right height to give you back pain. Raising the sail took forever because none of the lines had any purchase on them and you were expected to do everything with an electric winch. Which was slow as shit.
The only thing I even have a picture of is this stupid helm area. The rest of it was just so underwhelming.
When my father attempted to expound on the comfort measures it provided, I told him point blank that Sultana was far, far more comfortable to live aboard. And that I had done so quite happily for five solid weeks only a few months earlier.
The crowning segment of this whole story, through, is that I have hypermobility issues with my joints. By the time I stepped off that damn boat, every muscle in my whole body was bar tight, and now that I have been home for several days, my entire body just aches. My joints hurt, my tendons hurt, the weird little bones in my hands and my feet hurt.
I want to shake my father like a ragdoll and ask him what the fuck he was thinking.
