Happy international Women’s Day!
Friedborg my beloved
Something I’ve realised having rewatched season 1 of TTS, is that Cassandra is one of the only characters who treats Friedborg completely normally. She doesn’t show any discomfort with her at all.
Granted, we don’t see them interacting, but using Painter’s Block as an example- when Cass finds out that Friedborg didn’t show up to work, she says: “that’s not like Friedborg”, which shows that Cass has got to know her, in a way, she knows that she’s dedicated to her job.
When she goes into Friedborg’s room and calls out her name, there’s not a hint of condescension or awkwardness in her voice, she’s completely normal, as she would be with anyone else.
Idk, everyone else in the show kinda treats Friedborg weirdly, while Cass doesn’t, she treats her as she would any other person. We should all be more like Cass.
Bruh, who thought it was a good idea to have Friedborg bring a belle dress
Actually wait while I'm on here anyways I want to give you all the heartbreaking news (its not new but like you get what I mean) that it seems Disney has retconned the spelling of Her name back to Frideborg (in the Disney+ subtitles) and it annoys me bc in Lost Lagoon they spell it as Friedborg which (iirc) was the first time they ever spelled it out and back in 2018 I had to fight someone over at disney dot fandom dot com to have her page renamed from Freidborg to Friedborg and now Disney+ is stabbing me in the back >:(
You’re not wrong about Freidborg’s treatment being ableist. It’s a little insulting how pretty much every disability is either treated as a joke or ignored. Cassandra, Friedborg, the Hook Brothers, Patchy Stabbington. The list goes on. And that’s just physical disabilities.
LITERALLY it's really frustrating and upsetting to see. Friedborg to me reads as someone with maybe a developmental disability? I went to a school for kids with learning disabilities and, as that implies, had classmates with a variety of disabilities, including students with brain damage and developmental delays and similar, so I'd like to write her like that. I'm thinking she might have Treacher Collins Syndrome as it feels like a good fit.
Apparently in a novel she's stated to be Ariana's handmaiden?? So basically the equivalent of Cass?? I think I'd like to keep that but make it....actually apparent. Maybe Friedborg is just as adventurous as Ariana, just a little quieter about it. She can still be weird, but in a fun, deliberate way rather than writing a disabled person as weird for simply existing.
Tangled: The Series spinoff that’s just the entire show with Friedborg as the central protagonist and she turns out to be one of the most intelligent, perceptive and insightful people in Corona with a rich and interesting personal life, and only doesn’t get involved in any of the show’s main characters’ life events because she understands that it isn’t her place and is too busy being the hero of her own story. She’s made Old Lady Crowley cry out of genuine emotion - twice. She knows every secret in the palace grounds, be that a fear, relationship, passageway or chamber. This includes the royal family. It isn’t that she spies on purpose (much), she just tends to be in tangential yet discreet positions a lot. In the background of everyone else’s lives, you might say. When she is actively being a spy, she plays a key role in mitigating the damage the Separatists of Saporia do during Season Two and they never even suspect her. Nobody ever bothers her about her looks or muteness (biological? Psychological? We will finally see!) because the you have your loyalty to the crown and all that, but the actual first rule of the castle is You Don’t Mess With Friedborg.
