How would you redesign Freidborg?

So, I'm going to answer this from my perspective as an autistic person. Mostly because Friedborg, as far as I remember, literally was designed to be a joke character solely based on the fact that she doesn’t look or act “normal”.

There isn’t much I can say other than “I really don’t like this character and I wish they didn’t exist”, considering that an argument can be made that Friedborg is neurodiverse (this term isn’t exclusive to autism btw) and people have discussed at length for years that using physical or mental disabilities as a joke is harmful.

A redesign wouldn’t address the issue, in my opinion. I think the best way is to change how she’s written. It’s been years since I’ve watched the show all the way through so I could be wrong, but maybe have an episode where Friedborg is the main focus and we learn more about her and how her day-to-day looks. Maybe we learn that she communicates through sign language since she doesn’t verbally communicate (maybe because she’s mute or has selective-mutism) or learn more about her relationship with Aunt Willow when they were young.

Maybe she has difficulty with her eye sight and that affects her ability to work (maybe an eye condition like Strabismus which is usually associated with “crossed eyes”). Is she discriminated against at work? I remember Faith would be chastised a lot by Mrs. Crowley, is that the same for Friedborg because of her disability? You could have an episode exploring that and teaching kids the importance of understanding, empathy and patience with disabled people. You could even link that with Rapunzel and her struggling with her PTSD from Mother Gothel and her struggling with social interactions from being locked away for 18 years.

Long story short: Besides maybe some minor design changes, I’d personally approach Friedborg from a writing perspective and explore her as a character that highlights physical and mental disabilities in a kids show. I’ve honestly had enough with the “haha that person's weird and ugly” joke.

I’d love to hear other peoples thoughts though! I think with a topic like this, different perspectives are important.

Tangled: The Series spinoff that’s just the entire show with Friedborg as the central protagonist and she turns out to be one of the most intelligent, perceptive and insightful people in Corona with a rich and interesting personal life, and only doesn’t get involved in any of the show’s main characters’ life events because she understands that it isn’t her place and is too busy being the hero of her own story. She’s made Old Lady Crowley cry out of genuine emotion - twice. She knows every secret in the palace grounds, be that a fear, relationship, passageway or chamber. This includes the royal family. It isn’t that she spies on purpose (much), she just tends to be in tangential yet discreet positions a lot. In the background of everyone else’s lives, you might say. When she is actively being a spy, she plays a key role in mitigating the damage the Separatists of Saporia do during Season Two and they never even suspect her. Nobody ever bothers her about her looks or muteness (biological? Psychological? We will finally see!) because the you have your loyalty to the crown and all that, but the actual first rule of the castle is You Don’t Mess With Friedborg.

Old Lady Crowley, Freidborg, and Faith. All the staff work very hard, they’re just 3 I’ve always noticed being busy. I also like and appreciate the palace guards.
