Start by clicking on Hatabou in the menu (bottom left)!

フレンド means “Friend”! It’s a loanword from English.

Once you get to the next screen, there should be an easy-to-find tab called “ID” which is where you’ll find your own ID and add your friends’ ID!

Hit that green/turqoise フォローする button to follow them!

If you click on “Followers” (2nd tab), you can see who follows you. It’s easy to follow someone back, just click on the green button of their lil profile. If it’s yellow, it means you’re already following them!

There’s another thing too! The arrows next to them indicates who follows who. Yellow means that you’re following them, blue means that they’re following you. So having both means you’re mutals!

Edit (confirmed theory): If you get an error message that looks like this

It means either you’ve reached your limit on how many people you can follow, or the person you tried to add has reached their limit.

But!! The higher level you are, the more people you can follow! So if you reach your limit, just level up!

a short user manual guide to the care and feeding of your new friend

hello there, you must be a new friend of mine. here follows a basic guide to the proper care, feeding, and loving of your new friend, me. 

you can think of me like a small pet such as a cat or a dog.

I require:

frequent feeding (3-4 times a day, preferably)

frequent walks

head or belly rubs

regularly scheduled cuddles

constant verbal affirmations

training for basic verbal commands

here's a quick FAQ for my usual malfunctions!

problem: I am in a weird depressive or anxious mood. this often displayed by hiding away in a corner while we are in social situations, or by gazing off into the distance with fake half-smiles while attempting to try real conversation. topics may become morbid quicker or more introspective than usual

solution: apply additional cuddles and verbal affirmations until it goes away. this is a particularly good time to play with my hair

problem: I am getting snappy and more sadistically sarcastic, and it's less funny and more like, 'wow i cant believe you just went there' with an undertone of anger

solution: I am probably just hungry. I will probably lie about being hungry. put food in me anyways.

problem: I have picked up an irritating habit somewhere along the way. this may be something as small as ticking your hip or as big as bringing up a topic you really don't agree on but you don't ever feel like arguing about. 

solution: like a dog, this may take some time to train out of me. to do so, you will need to be gentle but firm and apply direction as soon as the irritating habit has occurred. if you wait too long to say something, the reprimand will not fully connect to the behavior and training will take much longer. reprimands may result in a temporary anxious period, where I worry you no longer will want to be my friend. please follow with additional cuddles and verbal affirmations of love and reassurance.
