“I’M NOT.” He snapped before he could realize it and tug at the leash on his tongue and swallow those words right back. Too stubborn and too touchy - nothing new here. But he was going to get it done, at his pace and in due time, even if that kind of comment made him want to drop all he was doing and give up entirely - which, of course, he couldn’t. Even if only not to give them this satisfaction.
Fuck them. What do they even know about that.
“I’m gonna do it soon.” He clutched the book closer to his chest, struggling to look for a comfortable position. He could allow himself to be a bit ruder today. “Why do you even care anyway?”

“WHY?” A fucking dumb question if you asked him, but it was out of his mouth before he could swallow the words right back down his throat. Realization hit him a moment too late. Maybe it wasn’t even the idea of having asked the wrong question that made him halt temporarily, stuck inside a bubble for a little while.
