And the adrenaline of fighting crime? That just makes them sharper. They totally never make rash decisions while riding that endorphin wave. All of my characters are Mature Adults who clearly delineate between Work and Play.

Seemed like every day had a way of getting worse than the last out here in the Commonwealth. Par had been minding his own business after a long day of scavving when a deathclaw had crawled out from a pile of junkyard wreckage and charged after him. The only thing between Par and dismemberment at that moment was the high, thick branches of an elm tree, which he’d scrambled onto in his effort to escape. To his horror, the deathclaw was attempting to follow him up the trunk of the elm, and its sharp claws dug deep through the bark as it reached out to slash at him.

Par realized his only hope was to reload his rifle and take as many shots at the thing’s gut as possible. The matter of reloading - while stuck on a tree branch that was still shaking from the deathclaw’s struggling - was more than a bit daunting.

Desperate, he pulled a few .308 rounds from his pocket and attempted to pop them into the magazine.

“C’mon...shit.”
