A random headcanon: After retiring from being a pirate he has a tough time assimilating into high society. Like he has the money, but he doesn't have the expected mannerisms and it's really hard. It's hard to say "yes" instead of "aye" and maybe stop saying "fuck" so much. In Syndicate, they talk about how Edward didn't appear much in public, and I think part of that is he just emotionally couldn't do it? Not in the way of like, he's shy or nervous, but just all the frustration of pretending to be some dumbed down, dull version of himself isn't worth it.
General opinion over said character: I adore Edward Kenway!!!! Not just for his nice face, but also because he's a greedy piece of shit rat man with a complex background and top notch character development.
