Playing with older characters in the context of newer universes. Don't know how many I'll do but I have a solid list of them. Below the cut, I've mapped out where Frinie and Bee might fit into the Royal AU.
Frinie is a blacksmith who specializes in custom weapons. There is magic in her family, but she doesn't really wield it herself - although a bit of it may come out in her expert handling of metal. Frinie is one of only a handful of blacksmiths in the country who are adept at working with enchantments. She's incapable of creating them herself, but knows how to weld enchanted items, gems, or similar into weapons without changing or destroying either enchantment or weapon. As such, she has made something of a name for herself.
Frinie has a great respect for her craft and the viability of the weapons she creates, and so refuses to create anything meant only for show or ceremony. She is slower than some, but the quality of her wares is better than most. She names all of her own weapons, and loves little more than being part of a customer naming their own.
She lives in one of the more major cities of the country, although still at least two week's ride from the capital. She lives with her mother and older brother - the three of them are their only existing family, and so are very close.
A technomancer who dabbles in magitek - that is to say, most of the paid work she takes on is to improve existing constructs and devices. Ones that exist and function without magical interference but which she improves through magic. But her personal projects are often the creation of entirely new devices/constructs/even machines that rely on magic to function at all.
Tentatively, this sort of magic is an amalgamation of elemental magics - with too little of any one branch to wield them separately or with much strength. The ability to manipulate metal/wood, the ability to create small bits of flame and electricity. Her knowledge of how to put these together with physical constructs is one part innate knowledge and two parts study. Her magic requires complete focus to wield - likely because of the low levels of it she possesses.
Bee lives in a mid-sized town quite a long ways from the royal city. She works as a freelancer, offering her services and sometimes inventions to other townsfolk. She has a small name for herself - well known in town, but not much wider beyond that. She lives above her workshop.
Bee has living parents and two siblings - a younger brother and an older sister. They're the kind of family who gathers often - for holidays, for festivals, just for fun, etc. They're close, but somewhat isolated - she has an aunt and cousins on either side, but only sees them once or twice a year.
