Any thoughts on what Friston has to say about the Law?
“An icy chain of command gives [the Sankta] an identity. It is dangerous to start a machine lacking any self-awareness in the name of a god, to fulfill a mission it cannot even understand.”
I’m curious about the intended meaning of “in the name of a god”. Is he suggesting that the precursors of the Sankta thought the Law was a god, or did they merely believe it was a gift given to them “in the name” (by the will) of a god?
Neither Andoain or the pope once referred to the Law as a god.
(I’m not sure I’ve seen a single Sankta ever mention a god, except for Exusiai in her ‘Idle’ line, where she asks her god if the Doctor is also someone “we need to save”.)
Rightly or wrongly, Friston clearly categorized the Law as a machine, lacking even the simulated self-awareness of the “Friston” Preserver AI.
If true, the Sankta’s precursors entrusted their survival to a glorified ChatGTP. They’re very lucky this has worked out for them as well as it has.
I’ve never assumed that the Law’s judgments must be correct. I have always entertained the idea that it is a blind, idiot AI merely trying to follow its instructions to the letter.
As a professional programmer, I know exactly how unreliable programs can be. They do precisely what you tell them to do, even when you didn’t truly understand what you actually asked.
Closure looked at what remained of the thing Kristen Wright called God and thought: "he should sound vaguely like Ice King"
And she was so right.
