Quest’anno a Friuli Doc ho avuto l’occasione di aprire il festival della canzone friulana rappresentato in piazza libertà e poi di svolgere un concerto personale in piazza mateotti..

13/09 - 17/09 Friuli Doc: a celebration of the wonder that is food and wine

The greatest food festival that could possibly exist happens annually in our favourite Italian city where our favourite Italian lives. Our luck could not have been better. Three nights of wild eating and drinking made us feel so wonderfully Italian. An entire region of Italy had come to Udine's city centre. We regrettably do not have a single photo of these packed nights where every street was full of Italians partying it hard and celebrating the wonder that is Italian food but we can try our best to recollect the craziness. Friday night With an early evening temperature of 19 degrees we set out into the night wearing our heaviest coats and scarves. Hitting our favourite bar 'Glass', Pia was reunited with her group of Italian homies as we downed white wine like water. The food adventures came soon enough when everybody sat down outside some market stalls with a plate of frico or a bowl of gnocchi. We of course tried both, with a beer on the side. It felt like we met every single young resident of Udine that night and with a later trip to Glass followed by some sausages and polenta it was a never ending evening of great Italian socialising. Saturday Although Friuli Doc shone brightest at night, the streets were packed with stalls of knick knacks, jewellery and of course free taste tests during the day. We found Baman, and would later stumble across Piderman to complete the dynamic duo.

We stuffed ourselves with cheese, bread, honey and pancetta from stalls across the city, hopping from freebie to freebie until we had practically consumed a full meal. Of course a food festival is always accompanied by alcohol, and we washed it down with fruity spirits. Saturday night We went on a quest. A quest for the most delectable plum filled gnocchi from Pia's exchange two years earlier. Initially we failed miserably, getting completely lost and after about an hour settling on some more juicy sausages. Wine and drunk dancing at Glass of course followed before Frannie saved us, pointing us in the direction of the gnocchi. We power walked our little legs across the centre and although our tummies were probably not prepared for more food, we made room. No regrets. The most glorious, mouth-watering giant gnocchi of our lives. Making our way back to the bar we sneaky drank half a bottle of red wine that had been left on our table. We partied with more amazing Italians, had one guy say that the 'hide yo kids hide yo wife' guy was 'the best nigga on the Internet' (please excuse the language but we thought it was hilarious coming from a random Italian. Alongside Frannie who said to a Margaret thatcher lover 'the bitch is dead), got free beer and then passed a packed bar dancing way too enthusiastically to the national anthem. The people of Udine are proud and loud. Sunday A lazy day with the rain falling outside and our naps lasting into the evening and frannie cooked us pasta.. We love you girl but for an Italian we don't know how you struggled so much. Sunday night The final night of Friuli Doc :( We began with wine but then made a discovery which would change our existence, Porter beer. The creamiest dark beer we have ever tasted. Sorry Guinness, but you have nothing on this. After sipping wine beside a castle with YMCA blasting in the background we decided to find food, as any sane person at Friuli Doc would do (even though take-out pizza had already been consumed back home). What we found was so much better than expected. A free beer and a whole free chicken. Tomato sauce and mustard included!

Bellies satisfied we then went dancing in the streets of Udine. If you have never heard of the Cupid Shuffle (like we hadn't), youtube it. A piazza full of Italians plus two Australians broke it down to this 2006 gem. We found more Italian friends, then we found some Nutella filled fritelle and then we found ourselves walking home with beer in hands. A good last night to a lovely little Italian festa. Thank you friuli doc and thank you Francesca love of our lives Pozzi.

September it's here!

September: it's a busy month! 

Schools reopening their doors with much relief of most parents, cooler air and temperatures are helping the grape pickers working in the vineyards (and not only them), the occasional rain helps the dried lawns regaining their natural green colour. It is also a very busy month for the enogastronomers living or travelling across the North East Italy.

Let's see what's on.

FRIULI DOC: 19th edition - 12/15 September in Udine, FVG, Italy

It condenses all the typical flavour of this fantastic region, Friuli Venezia Giulia, in a unique exibition that combines traditional flavours, internationally renowend wines, arts and crafts, music and much more. This year there is also the opportunity to follow six local bloggers that will help their followers through the many ingridients available in the Region and the best way to use them. The hastag to follow is #6xFriuliDOC 

The open cerimony will be this Thursday, in Udine, Piazza Libertà with the Julia Brass Band. Guest of homour Mr Joe Bastianich. For more info and details check the map here

GUSTI DI FRONTIERA: 10th edition - 26/29 September in Gorizia, FVG, Italy

This small border town will be bustling with people setting up stands and marquees, cookers, 100s of tables and chairs, beer drafts, fridges, barbecues, roasting spits and everything needed to cater for thousands of people that will visit during the four days and nights of the last weekend of the month. There will be more than 20 nations including Argentina and Cuba. There are almost 2 km sq. of city centre space allocated to this festival and there will be a bus service getting from the main parking spaces around town to the heart of Gusti di Frontiera.

Barbecues and cookers will be lit up Thursday 26th at around 6pm.
