Who else loves seeing fishing boats on the coast?
The painting I’m showing you today is an A4 pen and watercolour piece of two blue fishing boats in Beer, Devon.
In the sea, I used watercolour paint made from genuine ground up lapis lazuli, prized for centuries for its beauty and its perfection as a pigment.
The stone’s expense both today and in the ancient world, results from its hardness, which makes mining it difficult. The funerary mask of Tutankhamen features lapis lazuli around the eyes and eyebrows and it became the official colour of the Virgin Mary in the early fifth century. In Medieval and Renaissance Europe, lapis lazuli was imported from Afghanistan and was more expensive than gold.
My framed A4 original is available for sale in the Link, Castle Park Arts Centre, Off Fountain Lane, Castle Park, Frodsham WA6 6SE, 10-4pm Tuesday till Saturday till 21st June, for £145. Please just ask the staff in the café area if you’d like to make a purchase.
