Happy Frog Jumping Day!! 🐸
Drew a highly skilled boi especially for this day
May 13th is National Frog Jumping Day. This, of course, is not news to residents of Calaveras County, California, which, inspired by Mark Twain’s 1865 short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", has hosted a Jumping Frog Jubilee the third weekend of May since 1928. This year’s frogs will be hopping for a spot in the Frog Hop Hall of Fame and to beat the world record set by Rosie the Ribiter, who leapt 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches in 1986. Fans of the critters will be relieved to know that all of the little competitors this year will be biding their time in a frog spa under the protection of a welfare policy that presumably does not allow for the kind of handling seen in this undated photograph of Ruth Haig, seen here with two bullfrogs.
This photograph is part of the Hagley Library’s Chamber of Commerce of the United States photographs and audiovisual materials, Series II. Nation’s Business photographs (Accession 1993.230.II) collection. To view more materials from this collection online, click here to visit its page in our Digital Archive.
🐸💚 May 13th is National Frog Jumping Day! 💚🐸
Let's all take a moment to appreciate our amphibian friends, such as Rosie the Ribeter who jumped over 21 feet in 1986 and holds the current frog jumping record! Let's remember that we're all capable of taking leaps and bounds that we never thought possible and that, no matter how small we may feel, we're still able to go forward and progress!
“Frog Jumping Day” can be celebrated in any way that speaks to you! Perhaps you can play a game of Leap Frog, or go exploring at a local pond to see some frogs show off their jumping skills! Judging from the photo, it looks like Boca is going to pass on jumping today!
May 13 is Frog Jumping Day. Why? Well, the origins are related to Mark Twain’s short story “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” (actually, this was the third title of the tale). This game dates from 1915-1925.
