lower classes participating in so-called "expensive taste" fandom behavior such as taylor swift, musical theater, formula 1 racing, latex fetishism etc etc can be seen as a sort of aspirational behavior, like a cargo-cult ritual summoning of the means they wish to have or an escapist fantasy from what they don't. this is also reflected in self-help philosophies like law of attraction. if you surround yourself with it, somewhere in time style, and invest fully in the fantasy, it must become true because you believe it. sometimes this actually works in cases where you already had the wherewithal to make it happen, successfully eliding how the sausage is made, so you can give a slew of media-ready interviews about just believing in yourself and going for it. and when it doesn't work for people who didn't, it must be a fault of belief. they didn't do it right enough. they saw a penny. what most people with means don't understand is that this can happen to them too, it's a social circle that requires participants to be perpetually en pointe ("you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me" and so on)
