A Review of fromis_9’s “FUN FACTORY” Single Album
FUN!
This song is so energetic and fast-paced. The opening chorus is immediately addictive with the unexpected but also very catchy falling chromatic lines. The background synths really push the chorus forward and give it the “fun” sound that I believe the girls are looking to create. I thought that Nagyoung’s line about Ariana Grande was cute and added a nice little touch to the verse. The prechorus of the song feels sort of like anticipation, like something magical is about to happen. I thought that Hayoung’s edgier part in the second verse was pretty cool, but I personally wish that it would have been a little longer; the best switch-up is nice, but it goes back to normal so quickly that it feels sort of rushed. The bridge of this song is really interesting. At first it feels like it’s just going to be a breakdown, but then it becomes this really interesting a cappella bit... the final chorus is also really cool, because we get new content right at the end, in order to go out with a bang. Overall, this song is really catchy and very addictive to listen to; I know I had it stuck in my head for quite a while after hearing it for the first time.
Love RumPumPum
This song is much more calm than FUN, and enticing in other ways. The song has a very strong retro vibe, with the opening drum beats, synths, and underlying guitar. The song honestly sounds like it could be the opening for a cartoon—it sounds very magical and upbeat in that way. I thought it was cool how the transition from the chorus to the bridge included background vocals that sounded very much like the instrumental. Also, Gyuri’s high note is at a really cool place melodically and I wish that it would have held out a little longer into the last chorus. Overall this was a pretty easy listen. I liked how upbeat the song was!
Fly High
Wow. This song is something very, very special. This one really shows off what Hayoun and Jiwon are able to do as vocalists, that’s for sure. Their voices compliment each other so well. Something about the chord progression and melodic makeup of this song makes it feel very uplifting in a beautiful way. One part in particular that I really liked was Jiwon’s part toward the end of the first verse, right before the prechorus. She sings a triplet rhythm, which to me gives the song a more spaced out feeling, or in other words it makes the song feel more magical. The prechorus itself is really cool because it seems that all of the elements of the instrumental get faster and more complex in order to add to the buildup before the chorus. Then, there’s the chorus, which is just absolutely beautiful. I love the style with which the girls sing the chorus, because not just anyone could have pulled it off the way that they did. The chord progression here is also really pretty and it just instills these hopeful sort of feelings in the listener. The bridge is really beautiful in a way that I can’t quite explain. The way that it is constructed is just really well thought out with the low, rich piano, the vocals, and the very delicate xylophone-like sound. And, honestly I don’t think that the last chorus and outro could have been any better. Jiwon really gets to shine; those high note are not easy to pull off, and she sings them so well. They truly go all-in for that last chorus. This whole song is just a masterpiece, and I am really glad that I got to hear it.
Overall Thoughts
This whole single album is good, but for me it was really the last song that made this album so great. I love the diversity that we got between songs, from a hype, fast-paced song, to a more calm, retro piece, to a sort of magical ballad for two. And funny enough, I realized that while reviewing this particular album, I oftentimes referred to their sound as “magical” or “mystical.” I think those words summarize fromis_9’s sound very well. All in all, I am really glad I checked out this album!!
