From Patchy Lawn to Lush Getaway — Finding Landscaping Inspiration
This weekend I finally got around to facing the mess that is our front yard. I wish I were being dramatic, but there’s just no hiding the patchy grass, the jungle vibes near the hedge, or the sad, tilted mailbox that’s become a favorite for neighborhood birds. Every spring, I tell myself I’ll try something bold with the landscaping. Every spring, I chicken out and settle for a fresh bag of mulch and quick mow.
But there’s something about the promise of a proper “welcome home” that motivates me. A neat lawn, organized beds, and some actual color as curb appeal—Cranston deserves better from my front yard! My problem has always been knowing where to start. What plants even work here? Is it weird to want drought-tolerant stuff and still have something blooming in July?
Trying to get my life together, I stumbled onto Northscapes Inc’s Landscaping Services page (link for reference: https://northscapesinc.com/services/landscaping/). I was hoping for ideas, but I got a generous dose of reality too.
They talk a lot about landscaping as a whole mood—not just mowing but designing usable space that fits your lifestyle and the actual Rhode Island seasons. I liked reading about the nitty-gritty: how mulch color and wood type can change the whole vibe, how good edging keeps weeds from staging a revolt, and how even a bit of smart lighting can take things from “serviceable” to special. They clearly know what’s up with Rhode Island soil, which is comforting since I’ve killed more than my fair share of shrubs after guessing wrong.
What I found coolest was the bit about custom plans based on how you actually live—do you have kids who’ll tromp through every bed? Do you entertain? All those little lifestyle quirks matter, apparently. Their focus on lower-maintenance solutions (like those magical drought-tolerant plants) hit the spot for someone who isn’t ready for a garden full of divas. Plus, the idea of personalized service—no copying your neighbor's beds, making something that genuinely fits—makes the idea of redoing the yard less scary.
I may not rip everything out today, but I’m sketching bedding borders and imagining lit-up paths leading to my glowing (not so tilted) mailbox. It’s nice to think landscaping could save me time, level up the curb appeal, and—heck—maybe even keep the birds happy.
