WINGS OF FIRE HEADCANON TIME
Icewings have an equivalent of firescales called frostscales, and it happens when twin icewings are in the same egg. One twin absorbs the others ice and becomes a frostscales, able to freeze things through touch, and possessing extremely potent frostbreath.
The other twin usually succumbs either in the egg or shortly after birth. If the other twin is born it is frostless, and cannot breathe frost. The frostless dragons also tend to have issues dealing with cold, hence the low survival rate, but they can survive if given proper care.
Frostscales and Frostless Dragons are more common in hybrid dragons, particularly when the hybrid parents are an icewing and a tribe that does not possess fire, such as rainwings or seawings, although it has been known to happen when the non-icewing parent does possess fire, too.
Frostscales and Firescales are able to interact as normal dragons do, although it causes steam when they touch for long periods of time.
Firescales headcanons
My friend and I were talking about firescales dragons the other day and we came up with some headcanons!
-Firescales come in varying degrees. (Eg. some can’t walk on grass without burning down the forest, while others leave singed talon-prints instead of fire)
-They aren’t as rare as they seem. While Peril is the only canon firescales currently alive, that’s probably also because Skywings would typically kill them at an early age.
-Frostscales! Meaning Icewings who were born with too much ice. Icewings who grow icicles from their horns, whose talons slightly freeze to the floor if they stand still for too long, who can’t leave the ice kingdom because it’s way too hot anywhere else. ((A̶l̶t̶h̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ ̶i̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶ ̶i̶ ̶r̶e̶a̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶w̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶e̶l̶s̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶o̶.))
-And since every firescales comes with a fireless sibling; icewings with no ice. Icewings who wear big fluffy coats, who live on the very edge of their kingdom. (I’m imagining an icewing dragonet in a fur coat so big they cant move their arms lmao)
-This is more of an oc thing, but i think firescales would like jewelery-making, weapon forgery, or really anything where you have to melt/burn stuff.
-Frostscales would be seen as a genetic treasure, while of course firescales are seen as an abomination.
Feel free to use these or add anything else =-D
Any ideas/Hc’s about IceWing FrostScales? (icescales? I prefer FrostScales-) one of my oldest And most-loved oc’s Is flurry, n she has FrostScales :>
Omg, let me just say Flurry is such a cute name! I always struggle coming up with names for Icewings and Mudwings, so it amazes me how people come up with such great ones. As for Frostscales, I’ve heard a bit about it, and I think it’s a really cool idea! It would be a good expectation subversion if it turned out Icewings really respected anyone born with Frostscales. I always thought of Icewings as both hyper literal and logic driven.
Skywings have loads of superstitions and quick to shun anyone too different. Icewings, however, don’t see the point in getting rid of dragons that are basically guaranteed a win in any scenario? Frostscales dragons are automatically stronger, bigger and deadlier than any regular Icewing, and immune to frostbreath to boot.
Any Icewing born with Frostscales would probably be ranked up if they aren’t already in the First Circle. Or better yet, maybe there’s a separate Circle specifically for Frostborn? Where they’re trained and raised by an older Frostscales dragon to be as dangerous as possible. I think even dragons born outside of the Circles would be brought closer to the palace. They’d be separated from their families and maybe even given a new name, but it’s a small price to pay for the power they’ve been given. They should be happy to serve their tribe in such a way.
Obviously there’s the not being able to touch anyone without hurting them, but hey, what can you do. I do think Frostborn would have a harder time with things like swimming or really just standing anywhere that isn’t snow or ice. Fire doesn’t travel over stone, and water combats it. But water freezes and ice travels over pretty much anything. Any Frostscales dragons would need a separate cave system if they were to attend Jade Mountain.
Do you think Peril would be able to touch a Frostscales dragon? Or would their scales hurt her as well? OOH would a Frostscales dragon’s scale crack like ice when they’re injured? I bet their frostbreath is so cold it burns! Anyone who gets hit by it probably dies almost instantly from the shock. I also think Frostscales dragons would find it difficult to live outside of the Ice Kingdom for long, maybe their scales would start melting or something?
Okay so appearance-wise, I’m thinking semi-transparent wings and tails? Frostborn are probably bigger by default, with more spines. I doubt they’d have any colouration aside from a hint of blue? They’re considered incredibly attractive by most Icewings, although don’t usually land mates outside of other Frostscales.
I actually really liked doing this! I hadn’t given Frostscales much thought before now. I’d love to learn more about Flurry, it would be interesting to hear about her life and struggles.
Am I the only one...
I'm curious about something. So, we know that in Wings of Fire, SkyWings can be born with "too much fire" (aka firescales), but that raises a question: Do IceWings have something similar, where that can be born with too much frostbreath?
I'm thinking that if that's the case (as it possibly is), then it would likely be formed from twins, where one sucks the ice out of the other like with Peril. And since IceWings have blue blood and blue-tint scales, would the twin with not enough ice be a warmer tone, like pastel red or pink?
Now, in my mind, a dragon born with too much frostbreath would probably freeze anything they touch, almost (forgive me) like Elsa. But the twin without ice would be perpetually shivering or cold, since they wouldn't have the same resistance as other IceWings.
Honestly I'm just assuming things right now, but wouldn't it be cool to have that explored a little in the future, too? Or to have one of the animus gifts be centered around curing or helping dragons born with "too much ice" (I say we call them frostscales)?
More watercolor! Tried inking the drawing this time and I liked how it turned out a lot!!
The ice twins! Polaris and Khione (used to be frostbite but that name is bland so I changed it!) I just wanted to draw the two together! They're really close within their story so i feel like I should draw them together more?
Frostscales IceWing
(This is based off the post I made yesterday about how IceWings with too much ice (frostscales), are probably a thing) Frostburn walked along the ice, keeping her wings close to her body. She could hear the jittery talonsteps of her brother behind her, the small click-click of his talons as he struggled to get a foothold in the ice. "Are you okay?" Frostburn asked, looking over her shoulder. "Y-yeah," Fog replied, his tail spines clicking as he shifted his wings and tail. "J-just c-cold, like u-usual." Frostburn sighed, before circling back to walk next to her brother. She could see the soft curls of breath coming out of his nose every time he exhaled. "You know we can leave if you want to, right?" Frostburn said softly, turning to her brother. "I wouldn't mind getting away from the terrified looks." Fog shook his head fiercely, before looking right at Frostburn. "Y-you'd only g-get away f-from t-the s-stares until y-you froze s-something else," Fog said pointedly, before nodding to the ice that was crawling up Frostburn's arms from standing still in the snow. She pulled her talons out, shaking the ice off. "You're just full of positivity, aren't you?" She said, continuing to pick the tiny shards imbedded between her scales. "Y-you know i-it," Fog said, continuing to walk. Frostburn rolled her eyes, before quickly catching up with her brother.
