Got some work done on the apple trees at the hog farm last week. Predictably, the old ones went crazy with water sprouts after their heavy winter pruning, so I had to remove a lot of those. It was hard to choose a new central leader from the available growth, so I left a couple on each tree. Maintenance of the small trees mostly consists of walking around and checking on them

They all have superficial damage from cedar apple rust, for which we’ll spray a fungicide in the spring. It doesn’t hurt the trees so much, but it will disfigure the fruit, and we hope for a moderate harvest next year. The large trees are getting gnawed on by Japanese beetles as well. They seem to be bad in this area this year; I’m seeing more damage at my house as well.

The main threat to the young trees’ growth seems to be the farm hands! Well, and the livestock ate one or two that we planted in what, at the time, was an unused pasture. Somebody ran over one tree, and they’ve mowed over two. I sunk a fence post by one of the damaged trees to make sure they saw it next time, and they mowed over that, too! I need to get some heavy-duty tomato cages around the trees, or at least surveyor’s flags. Luckily, apple trees are resilient, and none of them have (yet) died from the abuse. The two that got mowed low were cut off below the graft union, so they’re just growing back from the rootstock. If these were actually my trees, I’d probably be pissed off about their treatment, but they’re not, so hey - an opportunity to practice grafting next year!
