Upon further experimentation with fruits and vegetables, our group decided to make paints from them. We made the three primary colours using raspberries, blueberries and spinach.
Making the red and blue paints were easy, we placed them into zip-lock bags and mashed the contents until it was usable. With the spinach however, we had to add water to the spinach in the zip-lock bag to make the liquid. This diluted the colour to some extent, but it was still visible.
Next, we started mixing the paints in containers to create other colours. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as we expected, as most combinations turned out to be a murky brown (instead of the gorgeous purple/yellow/cyan we were expecting)!
The reds dried out very quickly and weren’t strong. The other two colours had some presence. It was interesting going through this process, thinking about how paint may have been created hundreds or thousands of years ago when they depended on the organic and natural so much more than today.
