🌳The common quince, or oblong quince (lat. Cydonia oblonga). Despite the resemblance of its fruits to apples, the quince and the apple tree are not related plants.
Researchers believe that the quince originated in the Caucasus. From there, the plant spread to Asia Minor, then to Greece, and later reached the Romans, who developed the Portuguese variety of quince — the oldest known one. In ancient Greece, the fruit was called the “Cydonian apple,” after the Cretan city of Cydonia (now Chania), where especially large fruits were grown✨️
🌳Айва обыкновенная или айва продолговатая (лат. Cydonia oblonga). Несмотря на схожесть плодов с яблоками, айва и яблоня — не родственные растения. Родиной айвы исследователи считают Кавказ. Оттуда растение распространилось в Малую Азию, затем в Грецию и позднее попало к римлянам, которыми был выведен португальский сорт айвы — самый древний. В Древней Греции для обозначения айвы использовали название «кидонское яблоко» — в честь критского города Кидония (ныне Ханья), где вырастали особенно крупные плоды✨️
