Sooo assuming courier 6 now lives in the camps with the rest of the legionary’s and granted whether you save Caesar or not maybe you have your own luxurious tent/house whatever. You live among them, going to siri for patch ups, talking to antony about his stupid muts, mean mugging otho etc etc YOU ARE ONEE OF THEM.

BUT, devoting yourself to the legion after everything you’ve done for them, you got this lil.. this lil fox boy THING watching you ALWAYYYS. Behind the wall, across the camp, each and every corner you take he’s somehow there leaning against the wall. Or better yet he walks past side eyeing you. He said it himself when you met him too, eyes and ears of the legion is everywhere in the mojave, so Vulpes is constantly watching you (courier six) 24/7 just waiting for you to fuck up. Why? Beacuse he’s frumentarii DUH that’s why, maybe he only takes it upon himself, maybe he orders his other men to watch you too.

Even from all the xreader fics i’ve read of him, I like to believe IN MY HEAD that he actually hates the courier, maybe not hate but HEAVILY dislikes, maybe in the same of of how he feels for the legate but worse. Maybe he’s jealous, his dad (caesar) isn’t paying attention to him LMFAO, he’s not the golden boy anymore. Probably stabs his ego harder after his parents divorce (joshua…)

Let's take it as he canonically has it, not just lies to us.

When Curtis can't sleep, he wants to sleep but can't. He comes back to his little quarters worn thin, eyes already gumming shut, collapses onto the bunk… and the moment his lids meet, the drowsiness evaporates. The drowsiness, not the exhaustion. At first, he just lies there.

Usually this state drags on until three in the morning. If so, he prefers to get up and walk, occupy himself with something — sometimes that lets his brain reset and he can actually drift off. But there are the especially bad nights. Nights when he doesn't sleep at all.

Surprisingly enough, it doesn't affect his productivity, but it does affect his mood. On days like that, the NCR strikes him as particularly revolting. Even the people of the Republic he respects come off as pointless, depraved idiots. Every discomfort, every deviation from Legion standards feels unbearable. It sets back — badly — his gradual reconsideration of the NCR.

Nights like those are the only reason he's ever seriously considered turning to alcohol or even something stronger. Ordinarily, Curtis holds to the Legion's principles and drinks no more than his cover demands. But this urge has nothing to do with any cover.

In the pre-war military literature available in the NCR, he read that sleep deprivation is a method of torture, and he fully intends to propose the Legion adopt it once he returns home. For those who, for whatever reason, can't simply be beaten.

Yes! I love the frumentarii and I wish we got more side quests that involved them, considering our courier was essentially a frumentarii by its definition.

Here's some more thoughts and headcanons for them:

Their tents are larger and each tent has about 4-6 bedrolls. The tents are larger because of extra lockers to store disguises and other things necessary.

Vulpes has his own individual tent, which has an actual bed, although the mattress is hard and the frame is shitty.

The frumentarii don't have an official armor type, they wear different types of armor around camps, like how Vulpes wears both regular legionary and vexillarius armor.

The frumentarii have to be selected by Caesar himself, and he selects them based on performance as veteran legionary, decanus, or explorer. Like Vulpes, they have to show that they have the skill for quick thinking and an eye for logistics in the heat of battle.

I hc that the previous leader of the Frumentarii died just after the Legion took the Cove and Vulpes led the infiltration on Searchlight. It was this plan of his that had Caesar decide he would be fit as the next leader of the Frumentarii.

The way I'd see the structure going is this:

Caesar tells Vulpes what he wants done

Vulpes selects a Frumentarius available that he thinks would be best suited for it

Vulpes and the Frumentarius both come up with a solid plan

Vulpes tells Caesar

The Frumentarius carries it out

While on missions, they are still not permitted to use hard chems, however the minor consumption of alcohol or the use of stims & doctors bags ARE permitted if not using them could lead to blowing their cover or losing intel.

Vulpes is not the only frumentarii who visits the strip, he has a rotation with a few other well trusted frumentarii, as well as a couple frumentarii who gather intel in Freeside.
