Since you and Fanta talk a lot about Valensuela and Artura do you have anymore headcanons/ideas about them to share? Because I think about them a lot too, frankly.
someone else who acknowledges the minor characters of the manga…. the last of our kind…..
like i said i’m super bad at remembering all of the headcanons i have for people but!
-artura is in a constant state of sleep deprivation. like. he’s the top knight, right, or at least under the captain’s division (still no name for link’s dad!! f to pay respects!). it follows that as the top knight, artura has a LOT of responsibilities, the least of which being having at least partial responsibility for the four (or five) unruly children that, somehow, became the heroes. he wasn’t as involved with link when he was only one kid- he watched him, sure, kept an eye on him when the captain was busy somewhere else- but once FOUR links came back instead of one, he had to take a very active role in training them and making sure they stayed out of trouble and grew up properly. so add watching those five lunatics on top of his regular responsibilities- going on patrols, dealing with anything that may come up between the knights under him, working in recovery efforts after ganon’s been sealed, training the younger knights, etc.- he has not nearly the time he needs to get proper rest.
-valensuela takes a very active role in the links’ training after the whole apocalypse thing is taken care of. this is largely because of his encounter with green in the pyramid. while he wasn’t in control of his actions, he still knew what was happening and remembered most of it afterwards. seeing green fight, watching his decision-making and how he moved and turned a very bad situation to his advantage, did more to make him realize just how much raw potential link had than any bland training yard sparring. so instead of just letting the links go on the normal basic route for knights-in-training of their age, he takes them aside and he makes it more personal for them, works to their specific strengths, because he knows that the cut-and-dry one-size-fits-all training that most recruits receive would never be enough to bring out and hone the pure natural talent they all have for fighting. and of course they still have to stick with the regular training a lot of the time, so they can connect with potential knights their age and also because valensuela has a life, you know, but they certainly get a lot of personal attention from valensuela.
-both artura and valensuela just sort of.. end up adopting the links. this is something true of many people, but artura and valensuela especially, because they interact with them so often in their daily lives already. it starts as just the usual mentor/mentee relationship but it becomes a lot more than that. while a lot of people went through the Ganon Incident, the two of them were a lot more intimately involved than most, being possessed and made to fight against kids they’d watched grow up and all. so naturally they get a lot closer to the links than most, and there are a lot of times when one of links will go to one or both of them for comfort, because who better to reassure you than someone who had the same experience as you? and it starts off as little things, maybe green asking to spend the night in valensuela’s room because he’s having nightmares and the captain is on patrol that night, or maybe vio asks artura for some extra help with his bow because while he’s a natural shooter, his form still isn’t quite right, or red asks for advice on using two-handed weapons or blue asks one of them to spar with him, but it becomes a lot more frequent and it isn’t very long at all before one of the boys slips and calls them ‘dad’.
-artura pushes himself very hard, physically. i think that especially after the Ganon Incident, the fact that he was so easily overcome makes him feel sort of inadequate. what kind of top knight succumbs that quickly, what kind of top knight fails so entirely to protect the people he swore to give his life for? and he was always ambitious- you have to be, to get so high up in the ranks- but post-ganon, he works himself so much harder, trains so much more, holds himself to almost impossibly high standards (which ties into that first headcanon). and people have to tell him, hey, slow down a little, there’s no need to go to such an extreme, but to him of COURSE there’s a need, there’s an obligation, if he failed once to do his job then it’s his priority to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. and many of the new recruits see him as an inspiration, but he also has to be reminded to like… take a nap once in a while. wear some sweatpants. chill.
-i have literally no idea where i came up with this particular headcanon, but i like to think that valensuela and erune are related. he isn’t like her dad or anything, but maybe like an uncle once-removed. sometimes he’ll take out-of-town patrols specifically to where erune lives to come visit her and bring her things from castle town, and he’ll ferry messages between her and the links (of course they keep in touch!) and it’s how she meets zelda, as a birthday present from him after years of her envying the princess and wondering about her.
