when: some time after the attack
where: the bones’ home
The aftershocks of the attack were still resounding, as they undoubtedly would be for weeks to come. It was a fool’s hope to think anything else, and now that Edgar finally had a moment to his thoughts, he couldn’t help but kick himself for letting his guard down. Without work to occupy his mind, all there was to do was reflect. Not everyone had been at Mungo’s after the attack sent it into chaos. He had. Greta had. They had the fortune of at least being there as healers rather than patients, working tirelessly to mend whatever they could.
But even medical professionals needed a break, that was evident by the cots that lined the halls, occupied in intervals by healers who simply could do no more. Eventually the first shift that arrived after the attack trickled out one by one, resigned after a day of work, himself among them. They were replaced with equally distressed faces, the weight of uncertainty still clearly visible, if only briefly hidden by the mask of duty. He made it home before her, pacing anxiously in anticipation for her arrival. Now that there were no more rounds to make and no more patients to check on, whatever energy left in him is channeled towards her.
“ Greta - ” words escaped him at her arrival, and he’s wasting no time before he moves towards her. Suddenly all the day’s events muddle in his head, the clarity that he’d been afforded when it was needed of him departed, replaced by a flood of catharsis. If it had been up to him, nothing would have kept them apart after the attack - but that was a selfish hope. Each of them were needed in different ways, and he would never ask her to abandon her obligations, knowing it wasn't in her nature to do so. It’s with a gentle sort of care that he places his hands on each of her arms, looking her over - not for any contusions or bruising as he had for some many others in the last 24 hours, but in a far different way. In the way of a husband who has longed for nothing more than to be with his wife, and to care for her too. “ I’m sorry. ”
