"i woulda bet i'd be the first one to piss off a demon." it was a shit attempt to keep things light, laugh off the events of the motel. they were superstitious at heart, something they kept quiet about usually. there was something out there, though. something that had been following them. milo was happy to play with it, entertain whatever it was that was going on, but kody would have to be left out. of all people, she didn't deserve to be targeted for being a welcoming soul. can't a girl just have manners nowadays? "plan the first night was gonna be we wait for the sunset and do shrooms but now..." they were already seeing things, he wasn't so sure it was a good idea "up to you, though."

CUTTING THROUGH THE LOUNGE ON his way to the pool from the dance floor, reeve stopped suddenly and, to be honest, not entirely sure why. sure, this was maybe the first time he’d ever seen kody suzuki-braun alone, with no thomas in front of her and no milo hanging off her back, but it wasn’t like she was of any particular interest to him. she was just the girlfriend of someone he happened to know, little more than a topic for playful banter whenever thomas was around, and locker room style consideration whenever thomas was decisively not. nevertheless, he does stop, specks of glitter scattering to the floor as he tossed a quick finger to the painting he'd caught her looking at. ❝ arreguin, right ? ❞ reeve asked, genuinely unsure. they'd received the piece a few weeks before— something about end of life care and paying respects to an old friend— but reeve didn’t know much about it. he just recognized the style from pieces in the art building. ❝ someone told me there’s supposed to be a bunch of faces in it, but i don’t really see them. just a lot of spirals. ❞ said spirals being incredibly dizzying to look at, amped up on a cocktail of booze and party drugs as he was. he turned to look at her instead, brow raised. ❝ what about you ? tommy mentioned you're an artist, so what do your artist eyes see ? ❞

"there she is!" the moment they approach kody, they're interlocking their pinkies, going into a secret handshake without thought. muscle memory "sorry, i, uh... stepped in for a second." the absence of their outer shirt, the way they're unable to hold back a smile, and the flush on their cheeks says it all "you tried any of the, uh, refreshments yet?" it was like a project they were proud of, the amount of product they provided for this event. who knew they'd get into the catering business too? if mushrooms and pot brownies counted as hors d'oeuvre, that was.

last time milo had been here, he had pink hair, a girlfriend, and a six month streak off of anything harder than weed. things had been better, his conscience had been cleaner. of his desperation to keep things the same, to cling onto whoever he was before luke's disappearance, only one thing was easy to keep, and that was kody's friendship. there was no acting necessary, no pushing away any harder feelings. she made it easy to keep things light, happiness came naturally. there was such a thing as platonic soulmates, even if things were as stupid as— "okay, fuck, marry, kill: me, reeve, and.... luke."

normally, they'd have a bit more tact, or at least not bring up their missing friend under such idiotic circumstances. but, they were in the same spot everyone else they had last seen luke, it was hard to keep him off their mind. besides, what better excuse to be a dumbass than that they had just taken shrooms? even though it was just minutes before, and milo was still waiting for it to kick in "i'll only be a little insulted if you kill me. no pressure."
