DR. GREY
DELUCA DIDN’T CROSS THE LINE VERY OFTEN. working as an EMT early in his career had taught him how to separate personal feelings from his work. he’d been honored to be put on dr. grey’s service that day, however things took a turn for the worse when he realized that the patient was a young girl. her argumentative and neglectful parents had worked on his last nerves and he’d exploded at them in fury. he certainly wasn’t going to be in grey’s good graces now. when she approached him post-outburst the look of exasperation on his face was rife. “ they were driving that poor girl mad, I had to do something, “ he said indignantly.

It had a been a miracle that he had woken up from the coma but what came it was motor deficits that couldn’t be repaired. It wasn’t just nerve damage it was brain damage that could only be slightly improved with physical therapy. He had only recently mastered being able to grasp. Something so simply and he was frustrated and the only comfort was that he was alive.
He could be dead, his wife could have been left a widow, his children fatherless, so he should be grateful. Only he couldn’t feel entirely grateful. He’d never be able to perform surgery again, he may never even be able to teach it.
Now Derek was left with a nurse to care for both him and his new born daughter Ellis who he couldn’t even hold yet. He peered down at her feeling helpless as he waited for his wife to come home from the work he had loved so much. Derek extended a hand shaking like that of someone with Parkinson’s a disease he would have once tried to help with. The hemiballismus was possibly the worst part. The involuntary movements that might never go away and might make it impossible for him to ever hold his daughter.
Carefully he lowered his hand and let his daughter grasp out at his finger seeming to like the shaking as her face broke into a smile. His hand was now like the vibrating ball toy they had once bought for their kids only his hand would never be steady. He did his best to focus on Ellis though and smile as her little hands tried to steady his.

They’d grown up together most of their lives. Both coming from surgeons they spent most of their time running around Mass General while their parents were in surgeries. They went to the same school and were best friends both growing up in somewhat cerebral homes and always having realist outlooks on life.
They had been there for all the big and embarrassing moments growing up. They’d sat in the back of health class smirking at each other at the somewhat terrified expressions of their classmates as they went over sexual education which Jackson’s mother had explained in far more terrifying depth years earlier. They’d laughed over the disaster of Meredith’s first time and Meredith had smacked him in the back of head when he had slept with Sarah Richardson and Penny Caraway at the same time.
They’d been there for each other through all the big wonderful and disastrous moments. He’d been there when her mother got sick and they’d almost lost their friendship in the mix, but they’d stuck together. And now they were both starting their internship at Seattle Grace.
Jackson stood by the mixer with Meredith drink in hand and sipping his drink. She was acting weird and normally he would ignore it but he couldn’t help but ask. “Mer...are you okay?” He tried to follow her eyesight and found it on the chief. “Is there a reason you’re staring at the chief?” He asked waving his hand in her line of vision.
