After painstakingly removing the core of the fennel bulb, Roxanne opted to slice the bulb crosswise, finding that it might be the best way to approach the ingredient that Ray would soon incorporate into his dish. He trusted her with the task of cutting up the fennel along with more familiar vegetables that she has worked with before. Her confidence seldom faltered, but she is no chef. In fact, she finds herself feeling rather inadequate whenever she was able to pause her work for a quick glance to watch how Ray easily maneuvered through the small kitchen, deftly wielding various knives, spatulas, and pans.

Setting the knife down on the cutting board, she gives herself time to inspect her handiwork. The slivers she cut the bulb into looked fine, at least to her... Then she looks up at Ray, now expertly swirling oil in a pan, evenly coating the bottom of it to the point where it looked like a sheet of glass in it.

❝Whatever I might screw up, I'm sure you can fix!❞
